I have a 2004. 5 4wD. In trying to improve the steering, I have done the 2008 parts upgrade and Defiant brace. Those helped but I still had about 5/8" play. I tried tightening the locknut but it still had 5/8" play and now it would bind the box.

Recently I replaced the box with a Redhead rebuilt unit. What a difference! The play is gone and it is much more enjoyable to drive again. My only regret is waiting this long.

Replacing the shocks with yellow/blue Bilstiens helped the ride too.

If you can isolate the problem to to the steering box, I recommend the Redhead box as a replacement.

So you really feel it made a difference? I've been contemplating the installation of a readhead unit but wanted to hear from somebody who's been there. Dodge replaced my gear early on and it felt good for about 10K, then loosened rite back up again. Now about 40K later, it handles real loose while towing, especially in long sweeping freeway turns. During the winter I installed new shocks, new tierod at the pitman arm and a SBS. I haven't towed with it yet so I don't know if it's any better. If not then I'll put the new front suspension from Dodge on and go with a Redhead.

How many miles on you truck?

RedHead gets $316 for a reworked unit for my truck. They install some mods to make them more robust than the stocker and they've been around for many years.

I have 80k on my truck. After replacing the tie rod, drag link, pitman arm and adding the Defiant brace, then monkeying with the adjustment of the steering box, I was fairly confident the 5/8" play was in the box. When I am describing the play, that was how much I can move the steering wheel before I saw movement in the tire. I am probably too picky when it comes to steering and alignment on a 3/4 ton w/ a solid axle (so says the wife), but I am the one who drives it.

Can I feel the difference? Night and Day. Again, this only helps if you isolate the problem to the steering box.

Redhead

I just did the same upgrade. I replaced the box, added the defiant brace, and did the pitman arm tie rod end. Incredible difference. Redhead folks also great to deal with - first class customer service. Ordered Monday morning, arrived in ABQ Wednesday. Best $300 I've spent on the truck so far.
