After about 190,000 miles my steering box had so much slop, it had become scary to drive. I had the steering gear box replaced at a shop in. They also noted that there was a slight amount of play in both upper and lower ball joints. They recommended replacing them and doing what they called a four wheel alignment. I declined the ball joint work and will have them done if necessary under warranty when I return home to Ohio. The shop said that if I didn't do the whole job, they could still replace the steering box, but that the steering wheel might be a little off. I said OK do it. Now the truck goes straight and doesn't wander, but the steering wheel is off by 1/8th of a turn. My question is did they replace the pitman arm misaligned on the splined shaft, or do I need toe adjustment? If I need the toe set, how much of a charge should I expect? I would suspect something less than the "4 wheel" perhaps thrust angle alignment.
