After about 190,000 miles my steering box had so much slop, it had become scary to drive. I had the steering gear box replaced at a shop in. They also noted that there was a slight amount of play in both upper and lower ball joints. They recommended replacing them and doing what they called a four wheel alignment. I declined the ball joint work and will have them done if necessary under warranty when I return home to Ohio. The shop said that if I didn't do the whole job, they could still replace the steering box, but that the steering wheel might be a little off. I said OK do it. Now the truck goes straight and doesn't wander, but the steering wheel is off by 1/8th of a turn. My question is did they replace the pitman arm misaligned on the splined shaft, or do I need toe adjustment? If I need the toe set, how much of a charge should I expect? I would suspect something less than the "4 wheel" perhaps thrust angle alignment.

The wheel adjustment is separate from anything else. Either they just did not adjust it or they managed to get the pitman arm off. I don't think the latter is possible as there should be a dead spline for alignment on it.

The pitman arm is keyed and would be off 90 degrees if it was installed wrong. Basically, you cannot be one tooth off, you'd have to be 90 degrees off.
Like most shops, if they feel ANY play in the BJ's they pronounce them "bad". Truth is, stock BJ's can have some loosenes (Per Dodge) and it doesn't hurt anything. As long as they're within spec, it doesn't even hurt the allignment.
Just adjust the tie-rod at the pitman arm until the wheel is straight. It will have no impact on allignment. Or, have it alligned and let the shop take care of it.

Thanks guys! I will try the adjustment this afternoon. The campground we are staying at doesn't repairing of vehicles,m but I may get away with something that uncomplicated. Maybe they'll think I'm taking a nap under the truck. Otherwise there are some local shops I will check with.

It's really easy once you figure out which way to turn the adjuster
I've done it in a store parking lot. It's handy to have someone inside the cab to tell you when it's right.

Thanks guys! I took it to a local NAPA Certified shop. The made the adjustment for me right in their parking lot. Did a good job and only charger me $19!
