What does block heater do?

Fuel system sealed or vented?

I posed this question a few weeks ago right after Transfer Flow announced a 56 gallon replacement fuel tank for the 3rd gen. Dodge. I had no responses from anyone with direct knowledge of the new TF tank.

Now that the tank has been available for a while, perhaps now is a better time to ask my questions:

1. Have any of you seen the new TF replacement tank? TF says it hangs down 3 1/2 inches below the lowest part of the frame rail. How would that distance compare to the original tank? Does it hang down a whole lot lower or just a little bit?

2. Does it hang down enough to make you think twice before going on rough or sandy roads?

3. Also, I wonder if it has better venting than the Dodge original tank?

4. Is there another brand replacement tank I should consider?

I decided to go with the Titan SuperTank. I received it last week and it is now installed. They say it holds 62 usable gallons. My measurement was 59. But I could have been a bit off and the truck was not perfectly level when I filled it.

It appears to be a good quality product and fits the truck like a glove. We had only 3 minor glitches installing it.

I purchased the Titan SuperTank. See www.supertanks.com They have been making them for Fords and GM products for some time, but only recently started making them for a Dodge. Everything I had heard about their product was favorable. We had 3 very minor glitches during install in my truck:

1. The intake nipple (approx. 1 1/2" dia. ) that the stock rubber fill hose fits over was machined a bit too large. Had to soften the rubber hose in hot water to get it to slip over. It was more of a nuisance than a problem.

2. The same intake nipple was mounted a wee bit cockeyed from how it should have been. That also contributed to making the fuel fill hose difficult to put on. (Again, this was a nuisance, not a real problem)

3. The hanger brackets, used to hold the tank in place, came with two 3 1/2 inch long bolts. Those were the wrong length bolts. The mounting surfaces touch each other and only short bolts, say 5/8 in. long, are needed. (again, this was just a minor nuisance since we easily found some bolts that would do the job).

I use the term "fits like a glove", because that is how the tank fit into place in my truck.

Oh yes, when I placed my order a couple of weeks ago, they had the tank in stock and were ready to ship immediately.

So far, I'm happy.

You might try Aero Tanks, too. They have a 60 gallon for long bed trucks and I think a 40 for shortys. There's a blurb on them in this issue of TDR. Good luck

How much was the tank? Does it fill easily? Does the stock guage work? Thanks, Doc

I paid $825 plus $118 shipping (104 pounds - Idaho to San Diego).

Factory fuel gauge works. I did sort of a calibration when I first filled it. Up to about 3/4 full (45 gal. ) it was pretty darned accurate. The gauge pegged at Full after the next 5 gal. (50 gal. total). That means for the last 9 or 10 gal. the gauge was already pegged at Full. Have to remember that, say, 1/2 full is now approx. 30 gal. , not 17 gal.

The DTE reading is no longer a good reading. Mine has been reading 454 miles DTE since I filled the tank (about 70 miles ago).

However, the salesman, Aros, told me they are working with another company to try to come up with a software fix for the DTE reading. Hope they come up with something. In the meantime it looks like I can drive for quite a spell before worrying about DTE.

Supertanks

I had a Aerotank on my '01 3500, it was an honest 60 gallons, (measured). At the time it was reasonably priced, had it installed in Corona at their shop. BUT; they are hard people to deal with, very condescending, and almost rude. I have seen posts here where some have had warranty issues, and Aero just blew them off. I liked having the 60 gallons, could head to CA, fill up in Kingman, run around for 2 weeks, and not have to refuel until I got back to Kingman, thereby not having to pay for Ca's roads I no longer use.

Transfer Flow has probably the nicest tank on the market, but theirs is just flat out too expensive.

I would have bought a Supertank last month except they did NOT incorporate a drain valve in their design. They have a very good product at a reasonable price (sorta). Wish they would just incorporate a drain into it and I'd buy one tomorrow. Ron

gbraden:

I've had a 70 gallon in-bed Transfer Tank in my truck for over a year. I'm well pleased with the product and the company.

Joe Donnelly, TDR contributing editor, had TF install a 56 gallon replacement tank in his Gen II truck a couple years ago. He described the tank and installation in a detailed article that was published in the TDR magazine at the time. You could search back issues for that article or e-mail Joe Donnelly for info. His e-mail address is posted on the front page of this website.

TF will answer your questions if you call them. If you have a serious technical question they will connect you to the engineer who "birthed" that particular tank.

TF is a fine company that stands behind its products.

My article on the 54 gallon tank was in TDR #32, p. 142. I installed it myself. It is an excellent tank and installation went very smoothly.

I got some information and photos from Transfer Flow today on their 56 gallon replacement tank for the 3rd gen Rams. It does hang 3 or 3. 5" below the frame rail but that is at the rear of the tank. the tank is well above the bottom of the differential tubes. At the front, where high-centering could be the issue, it hangs very little below the frame rail, looks like about half an inch.

I think I just found the next toy for Sickly Junior--yep, he "deserves" a Christmas present!
