I recently bought an older slidein camper. I bought it knowing that one of the hydraulic jacks needs a rebuild. I thought maybe stepping upto mechanical jacks would be safer. Anyone have any recommendations? One manufacturer better than another? I have a 1978 Vacationer.

Check out Atwood they have several types of jacks.

I have a 81, and it may be like yours where the jacks are mounted back from the corners to an "L" bracket that is bolted to the bottom of the camper. All the new ones seem to be bolted to the outer corners of the campers. Not sure if they mount with Lag bolts, or are bolted through the corner studs with nuts inside he wall.

If you are thinking of changing to corner mounts, one thing to look out for is most of these pickup campers leak around the bottom of the front overhang, shich runs back and down the front corner studs. This can rot wood on the front corners. Mine shows signs of this. Its strong, but not sure i would bolt a jack to it. hate to see one of those new jacks come off and drop the camper!

I bought a 20 year old Wilderness slide in with front jacks not working. I contacted the jack maker and they sold me 2 rebuild kits for $26. Did the rebuild and the jacks worked like new.
