Anybody found a good aftermarket muffler that will replace the oem unit. My new truck is just tooooo quiet. I want a little personality outta that tailpipe:D

So, is the inlet 3. 5"? I just like to find a straight through Walker muffler for instance.

Ah come on Nowell, it's too quiet 'cause it ain't got no power! :p LOL

Yes I agree either Rip can get you set up right or you could call Dave Meheen at Diesel Power Products here in Pasco 509-547-7029

Congrats on the new (Red?) beast :D You oughta come up to Piers' Dyno Day at the end of the month and show it off :)

Inlet/outlet muffler

Mark, not to burn ya, but the inlet/outlet on the muff is 3 1/2". The 4" exhaust pipe is "necked" down at the muffler rear connection, and slides into the 3 1/2" muff collar. Shooter and I have used with great success a Freightliner standard muffler, 4" in/out, cost $52 bucks, tax included from Freightliner parts dept here locally. It's a straight thru perf tube muff, adds just the "right" amount of sound, not too loud, not too quiet. Can't hear it (much) in the cab. We are at altitude here in NM, 5K to 7. 5K, and moving air thru the motor is critical to controlling EGT. This muff is almost non-restrictive, and reasonable in sound level, (for us "old guys"). It lends just the right amount of exhaust note to let everyone know there's more here than just a DC stocker Cummins. Shout if you guys want part numbers, I'll have to inquire @ Freightliner if they're available in 3. 5". Frijole

If you only want sound replace the muffler only. But if more power is in the cards and future replace the system from the outlet pipe back. I used the Banks 4 inch system. Lifetime warranty. Included the elbo at the turbo back. sounds GOOD

Hey Frijole's, what about the Freightliner with a 4" pipe up to the turbocharger? seems like there's no reason to replace the rear section of the tail pipe if it is already 4", and the turbo-to-muff is what needs to be 4". man, for that price you could put a pair of Freightliner muffs in there and see what that does for the sound and EGTs.

So... ... . if the inlet and outlet are both 3 1/2" diameter, can the stock muffler be replaced by a performance oriented muffler like the Donaldson off road line with the 3 1/2" inlet/outlet. If so, which one would be the easiest fit to an otherwise stock system? Donaldson lists 5 different part numbers with various differences in each one.

Freightliner Muff #

Ok, here ya go: Freightliner # MO85171 I purchased mine on 6-10-02. Be aware of the following" This is a straight through, center/center muff. As you (and I) '03 owners know, our muff is offset/offset. I'm retired, don't have access anymore to current literature on what's available, BUT! sounds like GLolas has a keen eye on the Donaldson line, and I'll just bet my teeth that Donaldson makes the muff for Freightliner. Either way, both are quality pieces, are aluminized construction. The above muff slid in like greased owl stuff on my '01 truck, right here in my driveway, I hung it, burned it, and saw a nice change in my egt. The only thing stopping myself and Shooter from putting this same muff on our '03 trucks is we haven't figured out how to deal with the offset/offset configuration we are replacing. Me thinks GLolas should now take the ball, and find us a muff that'll go in the hole without major elbows and create another restriction. Also, depending on the muff length, we can cut the inboard side of the tailpipe off, and shove it into the inlet, and WALAA, we got our reducer fitting! Also, if a guy wanted to go with a 4" down/headpipe in the future, be no big deal, do it in the driveway on a saturday afternoon. GLolas! Take the ball and run with it! Ron

MUFF again PS

P. S. Remember, the muff IS considered part of your emissions controls for your vehicle, tampering may cause sticky situations with any dealer warranty issues, EPA may have a darned cow. I lived in CA for 45 years, know well what you guys have to deal with there. Just a heads up!

The easy fix for that is to use the Ford PSD intermediate pipe patched between the downpipe and muffler. The angles are just right.

wow. really -- the muffler part of emissions? aren't you talking about a CAT, something that comes with each and every CA sold CTD nowadays? the rest of them have no CAT, only a muffler, which does nothing for emissions.

I tell ya, this freightliner plot is starting to thicken. hmmm.

Patch pipe

Vaughn, you got a part number and a source? I've NEVER dabbled with Furds, wouldn't know where to start. Good idea though, (long as there's no COOTIES passed on to my Dodge). Need to keep on with this so we can cure a couple of problems. Thanks guys, Ron;)

Emissions stuff

DLeno, The entire air intake, fuel system, AND exhaust system is considered EMISSIONS equipment in CA and 3 eastern states, can't remember which ones. That's why in those states, aftermarket "goodies relative to intake/exhaust/fueling have to have CARB approval or can't be used on autos/truck that are highway driven. Some or most of this kind of equipment can't even be legally sold in those states, (at CA I know). In your owners manual, there is a blurb relative to muffs, and it states that removing/disabling/modifying is a violation, must be replaced ONLY with like replacement. I know hardly anybody pays any attention to it, (me included, but I live in a 3rd world state), mostly guys who have federal trucks, but the CA guys are gonna be in a world of hurt when/if CA starts inspecting diesel trucks. Hope it never happens, but you know Kalifornia! Ron

New Mexico/Mufflers

Hey Y'all!:)

Just got back from the dyno/drag event in Salt Lake City. Need to mention it was sponsored by my friends at Edge Products. They did a teriffic job too:cool:

Fijole, thanks for jumping in here, appreciate your info. BTW, just blew threw your neck of the woods on my way to OK to pick up the new ride. Just noticed your only minutes east of aBBQue. I often stay overnight in Moriarty, just a hair east of ya. On the way back, Richard and I hung out with "Too Fast" (Ford guy) in the northwest corner of aBBQue. He forced us to drink beer and talk diesel trucks:rolleyes: I gotta get in touch with ya to see if your around when I head for TX in Nov. Maybe some mex food and cervecas?

On topic, I spotted a dual 4" exhaust system this weekend. It may be the cat's meow for my truck. I would still like to find a direct muffler replacement before going to the dual system.
