I will probably have to replace the original alternator in my '96 Ram 12-valve pick-up. I think it shouldn't be too hard to do, but I don't want to make any big mistakes. Are there any hints or things I should know before I try it, besides disconnecting the batteries.

Pretty straight forward. Double check the field wire connections (the plug with the small wires). When I replaced mine it came with two studs instead of a plug. I did a little surgery and transplanted the plug connection from the old one to the new one.

I would NOT suggest that you get a rebuild, most are rebuilt w/cheap parts and do not last as long, if they work at all. Take yours to a electrical rebuild shop, or rebuild it yourself. Normally it just takes brushes and bearings, I had to have the slip ring changed so I had to take it to a shop, I think it was around $80, for the rebuild.

Don't forget, Geno's sells rebuilt kits at a reasonable price, with good parts. I've used one and it's got 50-60,000 miles on it, and still working great! Don't hesitate to call them if you have questions, either. They're great to work with!
