Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) replacing battery temp sensor

Does anyone know if you can check the battery temperature sensor under the battery before you go spend $50. 00 to replace it? I'm getting the 1492/1493 codes come up. Have cleaned all connectors and wiring. . still get code. Can I check to see if sensor is good or not. Have 2001 2500 diesel 5. 9.
