It was a straightforward task when I did mine. No need to drain the coolant, although you will lose a little during replacement. I don't think it took more than fifteen minutes tops to do the swap.
 
Are you sure its a block heater failure and not just a issue with the cord?. you may want to try and change that first before you go to the expense and the trouble of the block heater change.
 
My block heater isn't working now after working flawlessly for years. The heater itself ohms at about 19-20 and te cord at about 1-2. According to my multimeter everything is ok but it's just not working. I am getting power to the outlet, also. Any ideas?
