I'm replacing the front end lube in my friend's truck today b/c his front diff. cover is leaking real bad. I've enclosed how I think it should be done so could some guys look over this and offer and suggestions before I might make a mistake?
1. loosen bottom bolts of diff. cover and let most of the oil drain out
2. Remove front diff. cover
3. While the remaining fluid is draining, scrape the remaining sealant around the front diff. cover with putty knife or wire brush. If any gunk remains that I can't get off, spray some brake cleaner of it to get rid of it.
4. After the oil has drained (~30min?), use RTF gasket maker to make a seal around the front diff. cover. Begin to bolt down the front diff. cover, but do not tighten all the way. Tighten until the RTF makes good contact with the front diff. and wait and hr. for it to set-up.
5. After the RTF has had an hr. to set up, go ahead and tighten down the front bolts.
6. Refill with 7. 8 pts of 80W-90 gear oil and check fluid level.
Does this sound good to you guys? NOTE: I can't use amsoil b/c my friend wants to do it today so we were just gonna go with the best we could find @ AUTOZONE.
Thanks for your help!
