My 96 has started developing a vibration only when in 4x4. I have checked axle shaft u-joints and ball joints and narrowed it down to the front driveshaft. After I removed the shaft, there appears to be a bind spot in the CV joint (transfer case) end. I bought new u-joints at NAPA and started tearing into it tonight. It appears that I am going to have a driveshaft shop replace the u-joints after seeing how this is built. Am I correct on this or is there a way to drop out the u-joints that sit between the end of the driveshaft and the cross-shaft? Thanks.

Do a search on "double cardigan joint". If you are just doing the end u-joints cut the center out (X part) with a torch or sawzall w/TORCH blade and then knock the cups thru into the center. The double cardigan (spelling?) is a mother I hope I never have to deal with . . .

my local auto salvage sells re manufactured front shafts for 200 bucks all new joints. I think this is the way i will go. There is no way i have patience enough for that double joint. #@$%!#@$%!#@$%!

I agree: Don't try it yourself. I'm a avowed tightwad and do-it-your-selfer, but I have a local drivetrain specialist shop rebuild my front shafts and it is worth the cost. They do regular u-joint replacement so cheaply that I don't even mess with them if I'm not in a big hurry, either.

I get genuine Dana Spicer parts (at a competetive price), expert balancing if needed, and a warranty. Fast turnaround, too. Usually the next day. (I forgot to mention: Free, expert advice when planning or trying to do something different, too. Very valuable to me!)

They will also build/lengthen/shorten new shafts when I modify a truck or if I want additional length on the slip sleeve or heavier tubing, etc. Double cardigan or CV joints are not for me to rebuild.

If you're into 4x4's, two of the best shops to be on good terms with are transmission and drivetrain (shafts, t-cases, differentials, lockers, etc. ).

The specialized tools needed to do most of that work, not to mention the expertise, is simply worth the money to let experts handle.

I replaced all of the u joints including the centering joint a few years ago on my 01. The centering joint was what was out, but I replaced all of the other joints anyway. I did it all myself with a hammer and a decent sized vise. I don't remember the specifics, but I didn't have any trouble doing in myself.

FWIW
