I am looking at completing the above project on my 99 Ram. How difficult and time consuming is this project, and any tips would be appreciated? Thank you in advance. John
What do you mean "complete steering system"? Two years ago I replaced the vacuum pump and power steering pump and lines. I pulled the steering column out and installed new bearings. Replaced the intermediate steering shaft and used a Red head steering box. I upgraded to a 2002 front axle from my 99 for the two piston brake caliper and larger axle. The front axle I rebuilt with all new seals and bearings from one end to the other and used EMF ball joints. At this time I went with free wheeling hubs also. New calipers, brake lines, rotors and wheel speed sensors. I used third gen steering linkage, and panhard bar. I did this over one winter, about 4 months. I collected all the parts and purchased a axle out of a wrecking yard. I sold my old axle for the same price I paid for the 2002 one. R&R steering column and rebuild was a good 8 hours. R&R steering box and front axle 5 hours. R&R vacuum pump and power steering pump and hoses (while front axle was removed) was about 2 hours. The truck drives and stops great. Would I do this again, YES to a second gen. I guess this is what you are thinking about.
