This morning I discovered a leak at my water pump. Initial discovery appears to be a steady drip from the bottom of the water pump. I suppose the gasket could've gone bad but either way she has 133,000 on the original pump so figure I'll replace it and the gasket regardless. I've seen some conflicting information about which coolant to run on a 2010. I plan on doing a full coolant flush at the same time so I would like to know the correct coolant to run. I really have no desire to pay dealer prices for their inflated product unless it is absolutely necessary. I also read somewhere, can't seem to find it now, where I should replace the fan clutch at the same time. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

The pump is a simple repair. The gasket is just a big o-ring. As far as coolant, I would buy plenty of distailled water to flush the system, but you will never get all the liquid out of the system. When I did mine I bought about 20 gallons of distilled water poured it in reverse flow until I got clear water. Added my green antifreeze and distilled water, checked it occasionally afterwards to insure the proper freeze/boiling point was met and that took a few times adjust and then moved on. I do mine every 100K. Figure on spending a few hours doing it yourself.

Use HOAT coolant

piercetruckie,

Your truck should take the same HOAT coolant that my 2008 truck takes. You can buy Zerex G-05 coolant wherever you can find it or buy Mopar coolant at your Ram dealer. This has been discussed most recently TDR #85, pages 92 & 93.

When I changed my water pump a few months ago I found that the Mopar coolant was about the same price as the Zerex and I knew I was getting the right stuff if I bought the Mopar. I bought it at my dealer's for about $20 per gallon and mixed it with distilled water. The scuttlebutt is that Zerex G-05 coolant is rebranded and sold as Mopar, but it wasn't going to save me any money so I just used the Mopar.

You can buy the Cummins water pump from Cummins or the Mopar pump from your Ram dealer for around $200 or you can go with the Gates pump from Geno's Garage for a lot less. I have found that Geno's doesn't sell stuff that isn't good so I went with the Gates from Geno's.

While you're at it you may want to also replace the serpentine belt and the radiator hoses, also available from Geno's.

No, I don't work for Geno's or get a commission on their sales; I just have been happy with their service and prices, even if the shipping is sometimes a bit expensive.

Good luck,

Go to Cummins and get the WP. The Gates pumps are highly suspect in their life expectancy.

You are on the right track with the flush, 20 gallons or so of distilled water, fill and run to operating temp, and drain. Keep doing that until the drain is looking pretty clean, then fill with HOAT type coolant.

So, I wasted time, sat around trying to decide what to do while managing the leak with some Zerex GO-5. I decided to order the Gates pump from Geno's mostly due to cost. I could buy 2 or 3 or more for the price of a dealer or other part. Well on this past sunday the pump seized up and tossed the belt. So I ended up spending more by buying one at Napa on a Sunday. Yippee. The water pump itself was extremely simple and easy install, the belt however was another story. But I suppose the most embarrassing part was getting towed home by my girlfriend's 2006 F150. Oh well, she's back up and running strong, fresh coolant, new belt and new pump. Thank yall for your help
