This morning I wasted 3 hours resealing my vacuum pump on my truck and after a 5 mile drive it leaks worse now than it did before. I got the kit from Geno's and watched the DVD. I did what he did and this thing just freakin' POURS oil now. What did I do wrong? Is it possible the p/s pump shaft is too grooved? I have the spare seal kit, but doing all that work again today just aint gonna happen. Frustration level is just about to the point I'm gonna start throwing tools.
 
Only two things that come to mind. Seal is in backwards and the lip is facing the wrong direction (if its possible to install it backward, I forget from when I did mine) Or as you said there is a groove worn into the shaft. If you take it out and do it again, is there room to adjust how deep you drive the new seal in. Maybe leave is shallow so it rides on a good portion of the shaft? I remember doing mine and it was PITA to R&R the pump, the seal was the easy part. What kind of condition were the engagement lugs/tangs in? Maybe a new pump is in your future?

The oil line feed line is tight after the reinstall? (just thinking out loud..... )

the seal is in right,99% sure of that. I tried to smooth the p/s shaft with some emery cloth, I couldn't see much of the groove anymore. The oil line is tight, it's definitely coming from the seal area. Yes, this is a Major PITA to r+r.
 
Done mine 3 times now with the Gould Gear Kit. Still leaks. Next time I drag up the will power to remove that PITA again, I'm buying a new one. Until then... drip. . drip. . drip.
 
well yesterday I bought a new power steering pump since the old one had a groove in it I couldn't get out with emery cloth. I put some anarobic gasket sealer on the seal and on the aluminum seal housing when I put it back together the second time and after 40 miles it doesn't leak. The steering gear box with a new steering pump now leaks, BAD. That will be my next step. I got a half moon wrench in 15mm for the p/s pump nuts that makes life EASY. Just pull the p/s pump off first then the vacuum pump and life is good. Going back together is even easy with that wrench. I like Cummins but they are the WORST at nut and bolt location. It takes 3 different tools to get the damn p/s pump off.
 
I hear ya on the vac pump seal replacement. I got lucky no more leaks. That was a RPIA job. Don't wish to do it again.
 
Am I the only one here that does not sweat the vacuum pump R&R? Maybe I have done enough that it does not bother me.

You guys are leaving the power steering pump connected to the lines and just letting it hang right?

Anyhow, if the shaft on the PS pump is grooved or nicked, then you will get a leak with a new seal unless as suggested, seat the seal in a different location (shallow or deep). Not sure if anyone makes a speedy sleeve for the PS pump or not.
 
Sticks - that's exactly how I did mine (PS pump remained in chassis) still a PIA to get to and all that. Once it's out of the chassis no big deal - as always it's getting to the part you need that's the PIA.

Installed it, no more vacuum pump leak. Now the p/s gear box leaked. Got one from NAPA, installed it, IT leaked. Looked like someone forgot a gasket. Took it back, waited 3 days for another one. Got it installed, it doesn't leak, BUT now the threaded in p/s hose on the back of the pump leaks. Mother F'er, it just won't END!! I started on all this 4 weeks ago. I work on Freightliner trucks everyday, and I don't have this much trouble. But on my own truck, nothing but a damn headache. SOOOO frustrated.

Don't stress on your truck because of the NAPA parts. I can't tell you how many remans that I have gotten from them over the years that were damaged, not done right, even a couple that were not even cleaned & rebuilt, just re-boxed (still bad).



I can't remember, is the hose on the back of the pump an O-ring, compression, or NPT fitting. Either way, take it back off, clean and inspect and put it back on. You should be OK if the threads are not damaged.
 
yeah, I know it's not hard. Just ****** off and ready to load the 12 gauge with some 00 and fire away at the stupid vacuum pump-power steering altogether.
 
The OEM seal in my truck leaked pretty soon after buying it - took it to the dealership for warranty repair, dropped the truck off and returned the short distance to my home. I swear, in about a half hour, I got the call my truck was ready to be picked up - the mechanic must have been a magician - and never any more issues from the pump/seal... Oo.

It's like replacing a VP44 and transfer pump in an hour or less, start to finish. Sheer repetition and you get real quick at it.
