We're getting ready to replace the batteries in our 2001. My husband is pretty sure he read that the accelerator position sensor has to be reset after that . Any tips on how to do this?

as stated, key on (do not start) move the pedal SLOWLY down to the floor and back. Also, turn the key off after the pedal is cycled and leave it off for at least one minute. start it up and drive it!

If it seems like the throttle is jumpy, or you get a dead spot, disconnect the batteries over night to discharge any residual eletrical juice. same procedure when you reconnect.

I was not aware of this, and have to admit that I have had my batteries disconnected and had no problem upon reconnection.

What is it that you are suggesting will happen if you don't use this procedure?

I've done it both ways after disconnecting the batteries... hooking them back up and go and running through the APPS reset procedure. Can't say that I noticed a difference either way.

But, as stated above, if you experience any problems after a battery removal you might want to go with the APPS re-set to get pedal settings and computer back in alignment.

You're just teaching the ECM what the minimum and maximum voltages are that it will see from the APPS (which correspond to idle and full throttle, respectively). The ECM already has a basic idea, but the reset procedure fine tunes it. Without running the pedal through full travel before startup, you may get a little different idle rpm, and maybe not get 100% rpm with the pedal on the carpet, or maybe it might reach 100% rpm before the pedal hits the stop. No biggie. It'll figure it out after a bit of driving.
