Sorry to repeat this topic, but I can't find the original thread and since the topic of replacing the OEM exhaust was brought up in the thread of Ted Jannety's.

Why is there a resonator on exhaust? Is it to keep the drone that so many people complain about after they straight pipe their trucks to a minimum? I was thinking of replacing my downpipe with a free flowing mandrel bent one, trashing the resonator, and putting a straight thru muffler on it. Will I get the drone that most people complain about? I just don't want the noise to get obnoxious so I can still take my newborn son with me and he can hear me expound on the virtures of a Cummins. :D

CMac, I have been running straightpiped for nearly 50,000 miles but I do have a lot of drone and I am ready for a change. I have neither the muffler or resonator on!

I think the drone will not be that bad with either a good straight through muffler (recommend Walker) minus the resonator or if you remove your stock muffler and keep the resonator. That is what I'd suggest first, get the muffler eliminator pipe from Geno's and keep your resonator and then if it drones too much for you, then pitch the resonator and go with the muffler. You could also get a straight section of pipe flared at both ends from an exhaust shop for a lot cheaper than the Geno's pipe.

Does anyone make a mandrel bent 3" downpipe? By the time you mess around with mufflers and a new downpipe you might want to just replace the whole thing with a 4" system.

exhaust

is this a private mackenzie thread, or can any one join in??

i'm sure this will generate lots of opinions. i evolved my system to a 4" system with a long straight thru 4" truck muffler. straight and straight with resonator were both too loud for me, and the dreaded "drone" was fierce. with my setup, sound is comparable to the oem in volume, but deeper tone that i love. turbo sounds nice out the pipe, also. i got the 4"downpipe and tailpipe from ADT, and bought a Goerlich's truck muffler locally. i put the system on myself--finished with a 4" stainles steel tip. looks good and sounds good. i don't tow a lot, but the best i can tell, the drone is minimal/none. local big truck parts places can get you a similar muffler, or try the Walker 4". i have no experience with the Walker.

I just had a muffler shop cut the muffler out and put a straight pipe in. The resonator is still in place and the sound is great, even my wife likes it! Spool up time has been cut 50%, egt's are down, and boost up 5 PSI.

Just Do It!!!

Go 5" no muffler no resonator.

Deep Throaty Sound and MINIMAL Drone.

There is a Down side Though, Imports don't like 5" of sound and smoke in the window

Axle clearance with 5 inch pipe

Xavier,

How is the axle clearance with the five inch exhaust? I was considering 4 inch duals, but it seems that the five inch flows just about as well and would probably be easier to do (I want to piece one together from local NAPA Truck Part store).

Axle Clearance

Big Mo,

I have had the System on my truck for about 12000 Miles and with some off roading and playing in the fields around here and no clank or rattle. It exits in stock location and has a lot of room for spare tire but about the same as stock if not a little more do to the minimizing of bends in the pipe.

I got the kit from Diesel Pro.net and it weighed in @ 88lbs. on the Brown Truck

I think I'm going to head to the muffler shop in the next few days and get rid of the muffler. I've got my gauges and EZ being shipped tomorrow. Christmas is coming early for me this year!!:D

My wife wanted me to get a hobby that I could share with my sons when we weren't hunting. I told her to be careful for what you wish for. My 4 y/o has already told me his plans for the truck when he gets it, but I told him no Rescue Heroes stickers on the truck no matter how cool he thinks they will look.

New Magnaflow

Well went today to have the muffler cut off, but the muffler shop said to try a Magnaflow PT#12771. He said if I didn't like it, he wouldn't charge me for the muffler, just for the pipe to replace it.

Once on, the sound at idle was about the same as stock, but WOT the sound was a deep throaty sound. ME LIKE!!!! At cruising speed it seems to be quieter than before. The turbo spools up a helluvalot quicker and you can definitely feel it in the seat of you pants. EGT's went down about 100*.

I opted to keep the exhaust system stock with an adapter at the muffler. The muffler is 4"in/4"out and is a straight thru design. It weighs about 30 lbs. The OEM muffler felt like it weighed twice that.

IMO whether replacing it or cutting it off, just get rid of the OEM muffler. You'll be able to feel the difference immediately.

Aftermarket 4" and big drone.......

Drove me nuts. Couldn't hear in the cab. Partly because of the weight of my truck it really has to work. Anyway I got a 4" resonator and it cured the problem.

Here's what I think for what it's worth.

The long beds get worse drone. If you go with just a muffler you might try mounting it as far forward as you can instead of back by the axle. I would bet that will help eliminate the drone. I know one guy who just put on two mufflers. I don't think the second one helped or even my resonator as much as it being placed forward on the system.

Just my 2¢ again,

Garrett

I know I am not in the same ball park, as I only have a 3" system. Iwaited 50,000 miles to change out my muffler because I just "knew" it would be louder and I would not like it. With good advice from Joseph Donnelly, I installed a NAPA 21470 3 1/2" straight through muffler. Long story short, I was able to use the factory hangers with only slight modification to the front one.

Plesant supprise----I Love the sound. If it is one db louder I would be supprised. Only a lower tone. Thanks againg Joe Donnelly.
