I will soon be restarting a 92 Cummins which has been sitting for two years before i got my hands on it. I am in the process of rebuilding the Getrag 360.



my question is this: any special actions/precautions I should take to ensure everything is okay before I fire it up. I will change oil and filter for sure. I am particularly concerned about the turbo. After sitting for two years, how do I make sure it is properly lubed before it starts to spin?



I also have another truck I will be working on soon - a 93 on which the turbo no longer works - seems like it must be seized. Any words of wisdom on fixing it up? Can I get a rebuild kit for it or am I looking at sourcing a complete unit?

This one has 300,000 plus miles on it. Will I cause trouble for a worn engine if I get the turbo spinning again?
 
If you're concerned the turbo may have lost it's prime, remove the oil feed line (the one on the top) and squirt some oil in it. Then give it a few spins by hand to distribute the oil. When you do start it, watch the oil pressure guage and make sure the motor is building pressure.

As for the one with the bad turbo, replacing it is not a hard job at all. Don't waste your time trying to "free up" a seized turbo, just replace it. With 300K on the odometer, it's the least you can do for the ol' girl :-laf .
 
I would pull the wire to the fuel solenoid and crank it over until oil pressure shows on the gage. Then re attach the wire and fire it up.

This is the proceedure that Cummins recommends for marine diesels after sitting more than 3 weeks.
 
for sure get the turbo lubed up before take off, I would even go as far as to pull oil pan and see what might be laying dormant in the bottom of that pan, it can't hurt and gasket sealer is cheap.

Make sure your air inlet it clear of anything the neighborhood mouse or squirrel may have left, nuts, twigs and for sure have on hand a couple fuel filters. Couldn't hurt to lay some type of diesel additive to the tank to help clean the injectors which may be gummed up... . Those are just some things that come to my mind if it were me... Good luck on getting it fired up, which im sure won't be a problem
