has anyone tried using a retarder on their 3rd gen? We use them here on the rescue ambulances and they work great. Just wondering if anyone here tried it with an auto transmission?

I posted this on product/acc forum but got no response. Hopefully I'll get a response here. Here is a link to the retarder we use at work

that should work fine... if it needs to be between driveshafts, you might need to do some mods to come up with how to mount it, but if it could be mounted right to the pinion flange [i think our rears have a flange on the pinion???] and just a shortened driveshaft, that would work...

They do have a flange but this device probably requires a stationary unit with the shafts spinning inside of it. I'd say... if you've got a QC LB... loose the carrier bearing, mount the retarder in it's place and make a driveshaft to and from it. Also, I expect lower rear end ratios would be a huge benifit to the funtionality of this thing.

an exhaust brake and trans upgrade is cheaper

with some bracketry, you could mount the retarder to the rear axle assembly and flange mount one end of the retarder to the rear pinion flange, and a yoke on the other end for the driveshaft

I suppose that could be done Nick, I hadn't thought of it that way. That would subject the device to all the movement of the rear axle though, wonder how it would handle the vibration? Probably doesn't matter, it appears to be cost prohibitive.
