Retirement from the USCG after 22+/ looking for moving assistance (paid)

I am retiring the end of the month after 22. 6 years serving the public in the United States Coast Guard.

(BMC/E-7)



We are planning on a do it yourself move from the OR coast to northern lower MI ( just north of Traverse city)



My biggest hurdle is the need for a truck and driver, I am currently looking at a 26' rental towing my enclosed 8 lug 20' and me driving my truck w/ car trailer and 2 cars.

I have been looking at "pods" type boxes but I will still need to get 2 trailers across country.



Oh yea, before this I plan to move the wife,kids,dogs and cat across towing my camper (#3 trailer)



Am I missing an options? Drivers for higher? Better way to move all my crap for the least amount possible?



Also if anyone has interest my ceremony will be 1000 26 April @ the Maritime Museum in Astoria Or, all are welcome just let me know.

I'm currently a volunteer for ODFW in Klamath Falls and I can't count how many times I've been to Ft Stevens over the years we've lived in OR... I'm now retired and would volunteer to help for a return ticket but at this time I'm tied up... We are committed for our time through the month of June... I'd suggest that you try maybe a posting on the Good Sam web sight... We have family in MI and this would have worked great for me... I've used pods in the past with good results...

I also bought a 45 ft trailer for a semi, used it for a move and than sold it... spotted it at my home, found a guy to haul it loaded to my new home, than unloaded it and sold it... it by fare held everything we wanted to move and was the least expensive move... I was only moving about 1000 miles but with the trailer did it with one trip...

I retired from the Army 20 years ago, and although I don't miss the BS I do miss the job. Have you considered hiring a trailer transport company to pull your trailer? The one I am leased to is in Portland. You can get a quote by calling 800-456-2455.

Congratulations on retirement. I used PODS when we moved to AZ. They are not cheap, but it is pretty hard to beat the convenience of loading/unloading at your own pace, not to mention how easy it is with the unit sitting on the ground.

CONGRATS on your Retirement! this coming from a fellow Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officer, (Naval Engineering type)
That is a great place to have your Retirement Ceremony, with the 44' display and all, would like to be there, but Duty in Alameda is too far.
I have done one DITY move cross country, all the rest have been partial DITY moves, using the truck and toy hauler. Sounds like you have more than one trip going across!! they have changed the weight slip regs since the last time I PCS'd 3 years ago, so ensure you get that strait. Also, if you have the family depart a different day than your travel start day, that can help out a little.

I know the following comments don't directly apply but one of the members (could have been another forum??) moved his daughter cross country using a 40' gooseneck trailer with loaded conex (or intermodal shipping container). You buy the biggest lightest conex available, use it then sell it. On the extra trailers, sell the ones you now have, and replace after the move. I know, doesn't help with the cars that need to be moved,,,,hey I didn't say it was a perfect set of suggestions.

Sounds like another truck and driver is called for.

We have camped north of Traverse City MI, about three years ago in Sutton Bay MI. The wine country there seems to sell decent wine according to my wife. You will have to go through Chicago IL and Gary IN on 80/90/94 to get there. So if possible go through this area around 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM on any day, this seems to have the least amount of traffic on the road way or after 6:00 PM at night. Rush hour is a bear when pulling anything through this area.

Been toying w/ that one, problem is my open deck is too small for the size box I need, all I have seen are 20 or 40s. I need a 30 and the trailer I could use is a 8 lug 12k 20'. I passed on a 40' goose a few years ago and have kicked myself

I strongly suggest that you double-check the JTR for a DITY/partial DITY move. It might be worthwhile for you to haul the trailer with your truck and haul the cars with the rental truck.



My last several PCS moves, they paid for the partial DITY based on a formula that included (rate) x (gross weight of cargo) + (weight of trailer -- but trailer for one trip only). However, the JTR required that both the trailer and its prime mover (truck) must be owned and registrered to you the servicemember. So you might get just a bit more reimbursement by moving your personal trailer with your personal truck. Unless of course, the weight of the trailer would force you over the max HHG weight allowance.

The big hurdle is I own 3 trailers, one 35' camper, 20' car hauler 12k and a enclosed 20' 14k, got the camper and enclosed for a grand each here in the last 3 years. May just be having a big sale and be done w/ all the head aches
Thanks for the JFTR ref, don't get as much overall on the retirement transfer as a normal PCS
Oh yea when u add my shop in the mix waaaaay over my Max of 13k lbs
Still working on the what, how and when, all this was short fused for reasons out of my control
(No CRSP or admin issues)
