Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) retrieving codes and clearing

I just bought a scanner from local parts store for $125 and it seemed to read all codes and clear out the check engine light. Does anybody know if that completley erases the codes or can the dealer still extract them?

Scanner

You can read and clear the codes if you have a good scanner that clears them. Some only read and some read and clear. The scanner I have is the Auto-X-Ray works well for me.
