I ordered my rickson wheels and went with the steel as the I just could not justify the extra expense for the aluminum. Now my quandry is which tire to buy. My application is 2001 3/4 4x4 long bed, loaded with camper that is approximately 3800lbs and a 16 foot enclosed trailer loaded with dirt bikes etc. I don't yet know how much it weighs when loaded.

What have you guys had good luck with?

My local Les Shwab dealer say to stay away from M/S as he says the outer part of tires will wear excessively, I forget why.

I do live in an area where we get rain and snow but I can chain up for snow so my primary concern would be the wet roads.

Any input would be appreciated

Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill:

Take your time on the tire question - the 19. 5's you decide on will last a long time.

I had Bridgestone M724's on my steel (with simulators) rickson rims and didn't enjoy them much. Horrible in rair or snow, sidewalls cracked with 50 % tread left.

Almost got Hankook DH 01's - super tire for M&S concerns. Read posts on RV forums (and here) of guys who enjoyed them very much - price is reasonable too. Around $ 240 ea new I think - one guy said Costco or Sams club ordered 'em even chaper, if my memory serves.

I replaced the M 724's with Michelin 245/19. 5 LRG (14 ply) Retreads - got 'em from a medium duty truck tire center in Santee, CA for $ 125 ea. My concern was mud & snow, so I got the XDC tread design - which is working good - super m&s traction, not very noisy at highway speeds - in fact a nice 'singing' noise. Pics at : www.michelintruck.com. I've made two trips to Texas with em so far, with a loaded cargo goosneck @ 20,000 gross. 13 k miles on em - they barely show wear.

I liked the economy of the michelin retread - when I wear 'em down I can have them retreaded for $ 90 or less ea. I tell guys running the stock 10 plys that I run the 19. 5's cause I can't afford to buy the 10 plys - and suffer from loss of towing capacity.

Your decision to go 19. 5 is very wise - our trucks have a duty capacity that is WAAY beyond the rating of 10 plys.

Mine is a SRW 2500, so I guess dually's that haul moderate loads can be okay with 10 plys - but they'll wear out 6 tires quickly.

Depending on how often you run loaded vs empty, you may wish to consider the slighly lighter tire a LR 'F' vs. the LR 'G'. The G is such a heavy tire that sometimes I wish I had the 'F' - it should still be a vast increase over your 10 plys. On mine, I run 110 psi loaded, and down to 95 psi empty. Braking is way improved, too - more meat on the road.

I gave a complete report titled "satisfied with Michelin 19. 5's", here: https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=156358

Hope this is of some help to you, take care David B.

Oh yeah, forgot to say:

On our lightly loaded light trucks with 19. 5's I don't think what the Les Schwab guy said is true. He's probably thinking that highway rib tires (most 19. 5s are... ) wear more evenly - true but they have really bad wet traction and slip like crazy in snow.

I was told the tire I chose, the XDC 22 retread Michelin was the main tire UPS trucks run in Canada & Minnesota in the winter - good enough for me !

I can't imagine needing to chain up with an aggressive, self clearing tread design like this one on a 4 by. We got a huge snow early March (ha ha - for us that was 10") and I pulled the loaded gooseneck down dirt & paved roads with no slippage... .

hi,

was the cheapness of the steel rims worth the 120# extra weight worth of rims?... . Since you only have a slide in and a box, I gues that's ok but I like the look of my Forged elimiators... .

The tires a I have are Michelin XDE-MS 245 /70 R 19. 5" ... . 12 ply ... "F" rated... . Rated at 4080# @ 95 psi.

These sing a little but they ride and roll wonderfull... I agree with above to get a "F" tire as it will be tough enough... . Enough for my 15K 5th anyway... .

Only have 10 K on my tires, I use them during towing season, then put the 16's on for the winter as the trailer is parked..... should make the tires last 10 years or so... .

Yokohama TY303s (225/70R - 19.5)

Good move!!! I also went with the Rickson wheels for my 2001 Dually over 5 years ago and I've put 120k miles on my Yokohama rubber - TY303s (225/70R19. 5).

they've been all over the USA and Canada, plus most of Europe - from Italy in the south to Sweden in Scandinavia, in all weathers, seasons, road conditions and they've been absolutely brilliant. When hauling my slide-in camper, I'm running 80psi and without its 65psi ( plus tweaks to the Rancho 9000 shocks of course).

In fact I'm now looking around to get them re-grooved to get a new lease of life, that'll get me to 200k miles before I invest in new rubber.

I cannot speak highly enough for this tires/rim combination. YE HA!!!

Wow John, you & your sweet looking Ram are one globe trotting combo - saw you pic - very nice looking rig I must say. Nice to see a large USA truck in the UK - do you get many funny reactions from your fellow Brits ?

Ditto on the 19. 5's. It's amazing how they transform the ride & capacity - it feels like: Wow, this is how the factory should do it !

I suppose it felt good with the 10 plys too.

It just more hefty this way... . I'm running Michelin factory revulcanized pre-molded retreads (what a mouthful !) - later they can be retreaded 2 more times if the carcasses stay in good shape.

I must admit, I'm ignorant on the question of what exactly is 'regrooving', is that retreading ?

Regards, David B.

PS: I've got relations in the country north of London... .

Did you buy the spare also?

Does it fit in the stock spare location?

Thanks;

Jim

Yes I bought the steel spare too and with the TY303 rubber AND the 60 US gallons long, replacement fuel tank from Aerotanks in Pomona California, I can mount my spare 19. 5 rim/tire combo right where the OEM factory 16 inch used to sit.

Yes David, even after 5 years, I still get reactions from Joe Public in the UK & Europe and yes, regrooving = retreading I guess... . I'm based about 80 miles North of London but north continues for about 700 miles..... :)

Hi Bill

I went 19. 5 with the Goodyear G124 245's Load range G. I have a Lance 11'6" slide in and it really made a world of difference hauling that around. Much less sway than "E" range 16 that were on it. I did loose some juice pulling hills with the taller tires but it has great legs on the flats.

Good luck

Randy
