One of my friends has a 08 5500 6 speed manual transmission. He is thinking of changing gears as it has something like 4:88's What rearends do these rigs have, are there aftermarket gears available??

IIRC, the choices offered by Ram for the Ram 4500/5500 are 4. 88, 4. 44, and 4. 10. Only one rear end assembly has been used on 4500/5500 Rams since they were introduced and the Dana S110 mentioned above sounds right.

I talked to one of the guys at Randys Ring and Pinion. He said that the rear differential is not a problem, lots of ratios available, (he did not say what manufacturer) BUT the front diff is a Benz unit and the only gears are a 4:88 and a 5:13. This is a problem.

Gonzo,

I don't think the guy who gave you that had all the information. I think if you look at the Ram commercial website build a truck feature you'll see that 4. 10 and 4. 44 gears are offered in Ram 4500s and 4. 44 and 4. 88 gearsets are offered in Ram 5500s. I believe either model can be ordered in two wheel or four wheel drive but never paid much attention because I've never wanted a four wheel drive.

I don't know who manufactures the front end assemblies for Ram 4500/5500s but obviously whoever builds them would have to offer gear sets that match the rear differentials.
