Ringing Sound

I tried a 91 3/4ton out and after it reached operating temp it had a ringing sound on the right bottom side. The dealer said that all Cummins sound like that. The 5. 9's and 3. 9's that we have in equipment don't. There is only 96000 miles on the truck. Any body have any idea what it might be?

Old Iron, I have a 92 and as far as I know my 5. 9 Cummins does not make a ringing sound. I am always leary when a dealer says they all make that sound - just a guess could it come from the turbo?

Thanks Al for the rapid reply. No I don't think it's coming from the turbo. Maybe I should have called it a clang. It seems to be at cam rpm's, anyway it only did it at idle and just above.

Old Iron,
I had a rattle of metal on the passenger side in the front. Mine turned out to be a 'rock shield' that protects the belt on the bottom pulley that had come loose.

LT has got it. The shield around my AC compressor was broken and was rattling at idle. A little silver solder and no more noise!!

Thanks LT and Lil' Dog. It is hard to explain a noise in words, but this sound was on the right side near the back of the engine. The truck is sold anyway so I don't nead to think about it. The body was a little rough but I could have got it for $5500 US.
