The BAR and CHP are doing smog checks on the side of the road here in Cali.

Friend got pulled in with his modded 02 ho. Mach 1. 6 inj, comp box, ported head, and of course big exhaust,PDR 35/14 and AFE stg 1. Passed the snap idle portion,@2% failed the visual. As of this date not binding but it is comming... ... ... ... .

Just one of many reasons I left San Diego in 1988 and never looked back. A nice place to visit but don't want to live there among all the fruits, nuts, and socialists.

Say it ain't so... .

What did he fail on the visual?

They did'nt like the intake-no eo sticker Funny thing is they thought the Edge(comp) was carb approved :-laf.

The visual I think is like what's used in Arizona for commercial trucks. I don't know if used here an y more or not. The used to chain the truck and run up the rpm's in gear. They then measure opacity of the smoke. If to much smoke it would not pass. While the SNAP test I believe is used in one county in Arizona the opacity or visual is not on non-commercial vehicles. Don't know about California . I live in Arizona County that does not require emissions testing at all.

When I said visual what I meant (same as for gassers) they do a visual check for the correct equipment and ilegal mods. The coming law does a visual on exhaust smoke during the snap idle with no fan allowed.

If individual owners are getting the word and beginning to fret I think it's safe to assume manufacturers of these products, certainly any of them that may do business in CA, are already having private meetings with their lawyers, bankers, accountants, and engineers.

IMO, observing the initial steps being taken by the new administration (trying to avoid being political here) I would expect they will be prepared to put the full force of the very heavy-handed federal government behind all their new environmental wacko rules and regulations and may directly attack any aftermarket manufacturer who continues to sell products that they consider causes additional pollution.

The days of modified engines may have ended last November.

Bob...

I talked to Harry, he said the inspector said that the 2. 0% was a "Clean" number:confused:.

And I got news for the out of staters. This data that they are obtaining in calif is not for just future CARB mandates, but EPA as well. I talked with some of our environmental peeps here at work. #@$%!

They have been doing checks for at least the last nine months. I just recently started posting again. Sorry I didnt mention it earlier.

Mac:cool:

I live in NJ and got pulled into a random roadside check point about a year ago. The did the snap test or opacity. No penalties could be handed out because there are no laws on the books for diesel trucks under 10k (I think). But the numbers were being tallied to generate standards to be applied at a later date. It was a pilot program for medium duty diesel applications.

Currently Heavy Duty opacity standards here in NJ
Pre-1973 70%
1974-1990 55%
1991-newer 40%

Proposed Heavy Duty opacity standards
Pre-1991 40%
1991-1996 30%
1997-newer 20%

My truck hit 8. 96% opacity, but that was before the #11 plate

What I don't understand is the pilot progam was for medium duty, but the regs ar written for heavy duty?

When I go for state inspection every two years, they pretty much laugh at me. There isn't much they can check, lights/horn/tires/ebrake etc. Its a complete joke.

FWIW

snap idle portion

Is this where they put the pedal to the floor in neutral and run up against the redline for some time?

My worst nightmare. I've never had to have it, but I fear it coming. It's like some sick freak at the EPA was looking for a way to blow up diesels so they won't kill spotted owls anymore.

They don't really hold it. With me they let work the pedal, but watched as I snapped it open to 2000 rpms, then he said do it again but take it a little higher. So snapped it to 2200-2300 or so. Didn't hold it at the that rpm either time. Holding it open won't show anything, because the motor will clear itself out, its the rapid acceleration through the rpm's they want to see, at least I think?

They are not supposed to go over 3k by the new draft. The snap idle is bang it to the floor not holding it long enough to hit 3k.

The last time I ran a snap idle on my 12 v was with the cunnins up rate kit (smog legal) 230/605. It did 2% I was impressed with the Cummins calibration being so clean yet very responsive. Unfortunately also expensive.
