Canadian OEM Roadtrek Lays off 180 Workers

RV Business
Monday, October 27, 2008

Canadian-based Class B motorhome builder Roadtrek Motorhomes Inc. laid off around 180 workers last week, leaving about 20 workers at the Kitchener, Ontario, plant.

As reported by CTV, the effects of summer-long high gas prices and an increasingly tightened credit environment put the brakes on manufacturing. Remaining workers will finish up existing vans currently in production.

Chairman Jeff Hanemaayer told the TV station that it is the “worst situation” he’s seen in his 23 years of running the company.

“With retail sales being down, our sales have been affected even more because dealers have reduced inventory,” Hanemaayer said.

The company said that the layoffs were indefinite, as it was difficult to predict market conditions. But Hanemaayer said he hopes to bring workers back in one or two months.

“As soon as consumers get their confidence back, our sales will be back,” he said. "
