My truck has started a roar or grinding sound that can be felt when turning left most noteable while under a load and not in 4x4,would it be a u-joint which feels tight and were not warm after a 50 mile drive or the dreded wheel bearing? Any one else had these symptoms or cure? thanks tim

If you changed the gear lube in the rearend and did not add friction modifier, this will happen. It happened to me about a month ago. After the friction modifier was added it took about a week to work. Do several figure 8s in a parking lot, this will help.

jack it up

Jack up the front one side at a time and inspect it. Spin it by hand and see if it grinds. Check for something simple like a rock against the brake rotor, or a loose fender liner catching the tire. If it is a bad bearing, you should hear it or feel the play. You can look at the ujoint and listen as it turns.

Groan

Had the same problem on my '97 while turning left. Turned out I had to replace both ball joints and the "U" joint in the axle shaft. Am sure the noise was caused by the "U" joint because it would not pivot about one trunion when I removed the axle shaft.

I guess I got lucky for now. Some miles after the pdr 40 installation the down pipe had got over next to the rail and in a left turn especially under a little torque would make a noise I swore was a wheel bearing. Sure fooled me,thanks for the replies, sometimes it's the simple stuff we overlook. Tim
