That's right - I've negotiated a 5% discount for all TDR members who shop at http://www.RockAuto.com !

I was searching around on the 'net for a new alternator when I came across RockAuto's website. Their site is really slick to use and the sheer amount of parts they have available for ALL kinds of vehicles is extremely impressive.

I liked their site so much that I contacted them and ended up negotiating a discount for all TDR members. I do not benefit from this deal at all - I merely wanted to pass along my great experience to every other TDR member out there.

All you folks have to do is enter in a code when it comes time to checkout. The code must be typed EXACTLY as follows: TURBODIESEL

I have attached a screenshot to illustrate where to enter in the code and how it affects the pricing.

I ordered my new alternator on December 2nd - it arrived ahead of schedule on the 6th... quick shipping is only one of the benefits of dealing with these folks. When you email or talk to them over the phone they're really down to earth and a pleasure to do business with.

I have used them also, and appreciate your negotiation skills Matt. The website is very user friendly and their prices are very good as well.

I'm glad ya'all like the site and the kind folks over at RockAuto.

By the way... the alternator I ordered from them is SWEET. Bolted up like a dream and has been happily charging since I installed it - 'lazy' charge at idle issue... GONE! :D

Matt

'97 needs balljoints, so I'll give them a call

Well, the '97 needs balljoints, and also could use a brake rotor, so I guess I'll be sending in an order soon. I see they carry Moog balljoints at a good price. Thanks again Matt Oo. Oo.

Tim: I don't remember what it cost to ship the alternator... it couldn't have been too bad, though - I'd remember that. :)

Despite the shipping costs, their prices still beat out the local competition... and the competition only had reman alternators...

Not that I am trying to harsh on the Rock Auto site, but there seems to be a few flaws... I pulled up info on the

Dodge\2002\Ram 3500 Pickup\5. 9L 359cid L6 Diesel FI Turbo (c)\Transmission Manual\Intermediate Shaft...

and ended up with Parking Brake Shoes

I tried to backtrack to find the part through the search, but it just referred me back to the "Find you vehicle and goto this section... "

Not that I need an intermediate shaft, nor do I know if the NV4500 or 5600 even has one, I just wanted to see what was there...

No fault towards Rock Auto, tens of thousands of parts and vehicles to cross reference and put it all together in a pretty sweet online ordering setup, but if that part was what I was looking for, and I could not find it because of that flaw, next site I could find for parts and I would not even think about Rock Auto the next time. (Note - I did add it to my favorites list)

Now what would be really cool is if it went to an exploded view for each part as to where it is. . I. E. Transfer case output shaft seal... 6 to choose from and I don't know which it is.

Sticks:

In RockAuto's defense... in the olden days (and even today on some somewhat heavy duty 1-ton and up trucks... ) - the parking brake used to be on the output shaft of the transmission or transfer case. So, finding parking brake shoes in that section isn't odd. It would be odd if they had a part listing for that application... since that style of parking brake doesn't exist.

The suggestion for parts diagrams is very good. I gave the marketing folks at RockAuto the URL for this thread right after I posted it. They're watching us... :)

Again, in their defense... the auto parts software that is out there for non-OEM shops is somewhat lackluster. Their website appears to use an API if you will to make calls into a traditional auto parts database and translates it into a web-viewable UI. OEM shops have access to some diagrams... and that has helped me a lot in the past. Just point at the picture on the computer screen and grunt like a caveman - the parts dude will take care of things from there. :D

RockAuto.com came through again!

I just ordered up all of the coolant hoses (upper, lower, 'jiggle valve', 90° molded heater hose), radiator cap, water pump and a WIX oil filter for a whole heck of a lot less than prices I was quoted locally or found online elsewhere.

Matt, I bought a few parts from rockauto after reading this thread, but they did not honor the TURBODIESEL discount. I emailed cust. service and they said that their discount codes include numbers. Have you still been getting the discount? Its not much money on the order, but the discount is still part of why I decided to order the parts there... .

Sorry folks, I just looked through my email account at work and saw that the TDR discount had an expiration at the end of May. Crap.

I'll have to get in touch with them and see if we can get this reinstated.

I apologize for any headaches this may have caused anyone.
