Adjusted the valves a week ago. The nuts were a lot tighter than the 18 ft lbs the book says. When I got done, I put the torque wrench on and 18lbs doesn't seem like much. Has anyone got any comments? Should I be tightening them tight or go on using the torque wrench?

Stan I've adjusted mine twice and used the torque called for in the factory service manual(18 ft. lbs. ). Have had no problems in 189000 miles.

I have never done the valve adjustment myself but according to the book on page 9-23 and 9-16 it says 18 ft-lb for the rocker lever nut. This also appears to be what a lubricated 8 mm bolt should be torqued to according to the charts.

I got the value from the manual, was just concerned that they were lots tighter than that when I started and was wondering if everyone set at 18 or just tightened up real good.

As it turned out, I really didn't need to adjust as they were all within about . 001" and this was after at least 35,000 miles.
