I installed the sensor about six weeks ago... . It did smooth out the idle some, but the mileage never did increase... actually, it went down a bit, though it might also be associated with the winter blend fuel.

It seems like the 6 speeds are getting the increased mpg... . and I am beginning to wonder about the long term effects.

I think I am going to remove it tomorrow and see how it runs... in fact, if anyone wants a good deal on a used Rokktech crank sensor, let me know... I have the original  box and directions.

Installed one on neighbors 05 dually 4x4 auto 3. 73 gear. Noticed better idle, more responce from a stop and a solid 1 mpg differance. In fact he just made a trip NOT towing from Ga. through Tn. under 72 mph and got BEST MPG ever. 19. 1 But towing its even a solid 1 mpg differance. Noticed the idle and low end just pulling up my driveway from the get go. Well worth the $70 or whatever it was.

Here's my experience

On an 03 HO 6sp 4x4, with 60k miles. Stock except for an Amsoil filter.

At first the motor was quiet and I thought it might have been a little quicker. 5 days later the motor was noisy and running rough, I backed the sensor off to 1 degree and it took 2 days and all of a sudden the motor got quiet, seemed to be running smooth, mileage is still good at 20-21mph and the truck has continued like this for over 2k miles. Guess I'll keep it for now.

I put one on, mileage went WAAY down, I'm not too happy with it. Whats the deal with these things? Some go up some go down, can anyone explain?!

I too had poor results with the Rokktech. I tried all different thicknesses of electrical tape shimming but was never able to get my fuel economy as good as stock with the Rokktech crank sensor installed. The Rokktech web site does say that '03's don't respond as well as later models (although losing 0. 5-1. 0 mpg isn't mentioned!). Jeff

I looked. Where on the website, does it say that?

I haven't looked again but I thought it was on the web site--something about the timeing being different on the '03's. It may have been in an email from their customer support, which is excellent. They really did try to get the product to perform for me. Jeff

Rokktech Sensor

Hello,

after installing the Rokktech I took a 400 mile round trip to Dickson TN this weekend. The truck ran great but, the mileage did not improve at all. I believe I will take it off and go back to the original. So, I guess mine is for sale if anyone is interested.

Why take it off. Fuel blends just MIGHT be a issue this time of year. Put one on my neighbors 05 and towing and empty its . 5 to 1. 0 more mileage then it ever got towing and empty. Plus his idle is a hair smoother as well as off idle a bit more peppy. It dosen't give a BIG shot of anything, just a little improvement here and there.

Maybe I should adjust it a little and see if that makes a difference in the fuel mileage. Also, do we have winter blend fuel here in north Alabama?

I saw a one (1) mpg increase in my 06 hand computed after rokktech install and turned up as far as I could force it..... then tightened in place with blue loctite. Went from 14. 3 to 15. 2 on average around city during week. Highway I am holding strong at around 18. 6 where before it was 17. 9. That is with wind and little stop and go but mostly country road.

I re-intalled mine after a 700+ mile trip to Dickson, TN on the stock one. Coming home again (700+ miles) had a gain of about 1 MPG. And that with oversize tires (Toyo 35x12. 5x17 MT's)

i've had mine for about 4 months and havent noticed any difference except that on acceleration i get this strange almost staticy noise. when i let off it goes away. if i turn up the stereo i dont hear it... . lol anyone else getting strange results? i think i'm going back to stock in the morning. what else can we do to get better mileage and maybre a little more power?

Jtsandbird, it sounds like you've got some slight knocking on acceleration.

These engines have variable timing. When you drive empty, and very light-footed, the stock timing is not too retarded, but when you want some serious power, that's when they retard it for emissions, and when your best gains will be.

Maybe you should accelerate harder and shift early, like at 1800 rpm. If that does not improve your mileage, then you should back it off a little bit, maybe a half degree, until it sounds smooth and feels more powerful. Even half way (1 degree) should be better than jumping back to stock.

A lot of people try to too hard to get good mileage, and they end up with fouled injectors and stuck wastegates from lack of usage. The Cummins was meant to be used at full power every day. With your stick shift, keep the rpm low and accelerate quickly! (even 1200 rpm is ok with an empty truck, in the first 5 gears, and 13-1400 in sixth) That keeps the engine hotter, and less chance of carboned up injectors.

Had mine in since last September:

Pre-winter blend commuting: up almost 0. 7mpg, not a lot of samples before

blended fuel

Winter blend commuting: up 1. 3 mpg

Winter towing (about 9500 lbs): up 0. 2mpg towing 2000lbs more than last winter at speeds averaging 8mpg faster.

What I don't notice is any increase in empty highway mileage.

Got beat by a 6. 0PS up the hills between Bismarck and Richardton - he had 7 sleds on an open flatbed, I had six sleds in a 32 foot enclosed. :( I miss my J/A. I see a Smarty in my future.
