PacBrake Questions

hardware vs. software

Well, I've been looking at my next power enhancement and I have to say that Edge has fallen out of favor with me.

Has anyone else noticed that As Edge has grown bigger and more popular, the quality has gone down? Customer service seems to still be pretty solid, but reliability sucks!

I hear story after story of how Comps are frying and people having to get them replaced-- almost yearly! It seems to correspond roughly to them moving production overseas.

I'm glad that the customer service is good, but I'd like to not have to use it! I mean, just build quality box that holds up and doesn't crap out.

I doubt any of us bought a Cummins because of the great customer service Dodge has when they crap out all the time, right?

Thus far, the TST Pmax is looking better and better. American made, reliable, and affordable.

I'm willing to be wrong, and my intention is not to bash Edge (so you can put away the pom poms). I'm trying to see if my suspicions about Edge are true, and if so, how often.

Please post your Edge worship messages elsewhere-- this is just to see how many have had problems with Edge boxes, whether or NOT Edge did right by you with good service.

I had an EZ replaced.

I would be on my second truck and just now bombing it if I had waited for edge juice. They drug their feet so long on the new 3rd gen motors that it was just plain rediculous. I don't think they can possibly save face at this point. TST and others had it nailed down fast. TST gets my vote. I have had one small issue with a wiring harness causing ocassional CEL's, they shipped me one out immediately and I sent the old harness back with no down time.

Had my original Comp replaced - the typical Comp every-other-light lit scenario - got good service and a rapid replacement... BUT, I put the "excellent service" WAY down the list - no NEED of service ranks #1 in my book!

That's one reason I wasn't real thrilled or impressed with the steady stream of "excellent service" reports with SBC - if their product is so excellent, reliable and bulletproof, why the NEED for all that "excellent service"?

But that's another thread... ;) :D

Back to Edge, I have had a few questions sent their way via email - and POOR to NO response from them...

Hey EDGE - if you're NOT going to monitor and reply to email, WHY don't you just DROP that part of your "service", and leave fewer disgusted customers?

Meanwhile, the replacement Comp has been flawless for 2 years now...

Same here, got a new one because of not being able to change settings no matter how many buttons you pushed. Also seemed like I had the power of the comp even when it was turned off. Custumer service great, just send it back and have a new one within a week.

6 months with this one and erratic operation again, like it's fueling even when the box is off.

Have had my comp for 2 years and change with no problems. When it does go out or I get impatient I will probably replace it with TST.

I have been using the Edge EZ. Had it replaced with an updated version. It is okay but I am considering the Quadzilla Xzillarator. I am trying to get more information and thoughts others may have on these boxes. My biggest gripe with the EZ is it is a pressure box only. I think that some timing would help mileage when not towing. The EZ seems to mess with the way the engine runs and driveability. The Quadzilla is not to bad of a price, but am I getting what I pay for?? Hopefully others will chime in on this.

Have my old EZ box under rear seat. Didn't have any issues with it in the 2 years I ran it. (For sale?) Went with the HPCR box, pretty much run it on 2x2 most of the time, seems to get best mileage there, towing and "unloaded". With 87k hard *** miles on the stock clutch and turbo, I'll keep it on 2x2 or sometimes 3x3 when empty, even with the intermittent CEL.

I'm on my 3rd Comp in 4 years and I don't put but maybe 10,000 miles on a year. I'd have an FMS if the price was less. I've heard of shuttering problems with the TST box. I'm not sure if they have that resolved by now or not.

All fuel boxes from all manufactures will have issues here or there.

No one company is perfect.

Who ever you choose to go with TST and Edge are both American companies started by good people with good reputations.

I have ran both the Drag Comp box on my 99, and the TST Powermax Comp stacked with the EZ.

Both combinations will put out great power.

I ran a used EZ for 3 or 4 months. It worked flawlessly. I sold it for what I had paid & switched to a CaTCHER & I am very happy with it. I've added a Blue Chip APB. The additional power is pretty impressive but it does come on pretty fast.

I ran a used Raptor (re-badged EZ) that I got on E-bay ($300), for a couple of years. Started having troubles so I pulled it and sent it to Edge just to make sure that my problem was with the box. They tested it for free and told me it was indeed the problem. Now I was perfectly happy with that when the guy on the phone says "I'll tell you what I can do for ya". He sold me a new comp for $350 :--) What was I going to say  I bought it and proceeded to break my own rule of never tampering with the "wire". What was I thinkin, I tapped the wire and am having loads of fun with this thing. Oo. A total blast to drive. No complaints here. Yes, I was leaning away do to hearing bad things about too much timing etc. now I just choose to "hope" i'll be ok :-laf

Dang Justin, there you go thinkin' again!

I bought a used EZ, been great for a couple of years now.

I recently bought a used Comp from a member, it's sitting on the work bench. This particular unit was a replacement for an earlier version that "defected". So I got the latest version and it's been field tested.

There are a lot of responses here from 3rd Gen owners. Seems to me that a 2nd Gen fueling box and a 3rd Gen fueling box is not an apples-to-apples comparison. It might suggest something about the company's quality in general, but I think the discussion is better served focused on products specific to the application.

When was the last time TST upgraded their PM3? Maybe they got it right and haven't had to. Don't know. I have talked at length, in person with Mark Chapple and listened to his seminars on several occasions. More than once I've been a credit card's thickness away from buying a TST PM3. So why did I buy a used Comp instead?

Functionality - I understand how the Comp operates and I really like the sub-level feature for low-boost smoke control. I like the 25-setting flexibility. Even though I'll probably settle in on 3 settings, I'll feel like they're tailored just for me. For those who claim that the TST doesn't add timing, better check with the authority. Mark says the PM3 does add timing. Compared to Edge? Well that's a trade secret that I'm not privy to nor would probably understand if I was. The TST has a defueling at EGT limit feature, which is a great safety feature... for those who don't pay attention to their gauges ;)

Packaging and Installation - I already have a lovely set of analog gauges. I have a thermocouple that tends to come loose because I did such fantastic job of installing it  I don't really want to drill another hole in my stock exhaust manifold. Note - HTT makes one with two holes tapped.

I can't figure out a slick place to mount the PM3 unit, then there's the remote control that's got to go somewhere? The Comp is going to be mounted in my ashtray - out of sight yet easily visible and accessible.

Price - Given that I just bought a new SBC Con OFE installed and F1 injectors, I'm perfectly willing to spend money on the best stuff (I knew those stock options would pay off someday ;)) That being said, and my budget being spent, the used Comp was in the low $400's and a new PM3 w/remote is in the mid $700's. So price wasn't the primary concern, just a regular concern.

Performance - I don't even think performance is an issue. Both boxes kick a**. About the only negative I've heard about the TST is, when it defuels on the top levels, it can be pretty rough - like full throttle/no throttle and back again. Probably not much of an issue for me since I'll rarely be at the top level anyway. I've heard of problems with both, probably more for Edge, but then I have no idea about the problems/per unit ratio. I suspect Edge has sold a heck of lot more Comps than TST has sold PM3's. Don't know.

Am I saying Mach 1. 6's are better than Mach 4's - nope. Maybe just better for me.

Am I saying Edge Comp is better than TST PM3 - nope. Maybe just better for me.

I'm still hoping my used Comp is going to work out, maybe I'll install it this weekend. Haven't committed to tapping the wire yet either, but I did buy Posi-Tap connectors. Posi-TAP, ooh that's ominous ;)

Like I really need to think about this stuff some more :-laf

I had an EZ replaced.

I bought my COMP in 2001 (put on a 99 truck)

And then bought a 2002, and had edge upgrade it... I did like my COMP on my 02 very much, and never had a problem (maybe this was before they sold out?)

But I went with the TST on my 03 for obvious reasons... And I even Beta tested the 03 JUICE,But the PMCR founds its way back on my truck. So you know who I prefer

Although the 03 juice was a nice box, but too much fluff, not enough HP
