How about a new INS system that works for America.

I love winter squash and always stock up in hopes of having some during the winter. Unfortunately I don't have a root cellar to store it in and the garage has proven to be insufficient. I live in the swamp, so digging a hole and building a true root cellar is out of the question. I have an idea that I want to try this year but I'd like to pass it by you guys and see if you think it will work.

I'm thinking of building a box of straw bales, against the side of the house and place my favorite squash in the center of the bale box. Do you think the warmth from the house will be enough to prevent the squash from freezing?

Doc. . my relatives in N. D. use a old chest freezer to store their veggies in. . squash, onions ect. . it's in their cellar that is also to wet

Doc, I think your straw house will work fine as long as no wolves come huffing and puffing around, remember what happened to that pig. I've known folks who just bury their squash under three feet of straw, it works fine. Moisture is your main concern, it can cause mold.
