I ran 15-40 last winter and had to start the truck outside one night not plugged in at -20 degrees ( my nephews wedding) very scarey ( the truck starting not the wedding). I will use 10-30 this winter no if, ands, or buts.

how far below 0

I live in western Maryland(up in the mountains). Temps range from 35 to-35 or colder. I've run nothing but rotella 15w-40,sometimes plugged in sometimes not. Have'nt had any problems with mine yet. Just remember to let her warm up good before you take off. I used to work at a k. w. dealer and thats all we ever used,no problems. Of course maybe mn. gets or stays colder for long periods of time. Maybe check owners manual or dealer. Doug

Dave if all you make are short runs, no long distance, I think I would go with the lighter oil if its much below zero as these eng. dont warm up very fast. My 2 cents. chuck.

Shell also make a synthetic blend Rotella: Rotella SB 10W40. It only cost about a $1. 00 more per gallon then the regular Rotella 15W40. I've run this for over 125K now with no problems.

Where can you find the synthetic Rotella?

It's suppose to be hitting Wally-World (Wal-Mart) any time. This is basis a company memo I recieved about a week ago. I haven't tried it yet but will at next oil change.

In Iowa it gets pretty cold too, so I know how it goes. I ran 15W-40 in my tractor one winter. It was sitting outside one night and for fun I took the dipstick out. It was only about 5 degrees F and the oil was all stringy and gooey. I put an oil pan heater on it before starting it. I usually keep it in the barn and use a tank heater, which helps quite a bit. However, since my Ram sits outside at work all day, I opt for 10W-30 Rotella. I usually change it out around the first part of December, and by the end of February, the really cold weather is done and I change back to 15W-40 Rotella. With the 10W-30 in it, I was able to start the Ram at -25F Ambient temp in the parking lot after sitting for 9+ hours and it didn't even rattle or smoke that bad. Just my 2 cents...

I did not know about the 10-40 Rotella (I've been using the 15-40 year-round for two years, here in Mass).

I'll be trying the 10-40 for Jan & Feb this year.

Thanks guys.

PS I plug it in over night, but cannot do that while it sits in the lot at work all day.

Also use the Dodge vinyl grill cover when it stays below 32 F.

I know this thread is old, but here's my . 02 worth. I am no scientist but I did work nights stocking at Wal-Mart last winter. (Almost the same right?!) I had several mornings of well below zero and nowhere to plug in. As long as my batteries were charged, I never had problems starting with the rotella 15-40, and no rough idling or smoke. I did get tired of hearing/feeling the grid heaters cycle on and off while I sat in the cold, but thats another thread... .
