Anyone know if the current stock or Rotella 15W40 API CH-4 actually meets the CI-4 rating or do I need to wait until the bottle actually carries the CI-4 rating. The Rotella site says 15W40 is CI-4 rated but it does not say if this is a new product or if the stuff always met those standards. I am looking to change in the oil in the new beast soon and want to make sure that I put the right stuff in the crankcase. Cheers.

Casey, that fuel filter # for the 03's, are you sure thats right? (on Diesel Ram site) I used #FS 1268 on my 00, and my parts man said it was the same for my 03. Let me know, cause I just got a case of them from Cummins, didn't ask them, just ordered. TIA,

Larry,

I got that info from the Fleetguard site. FS19579 supersedes 1268. That info is verified by the listing on Geno's Garage site as well. Since I didn't have a 00 and I haven't changed my filter on the 03 yet, I can't verify that from experience but is sure looks like that number is correct.

I went through the same oil problems you have and heres the scoop. I purchased rotella t at a local big truck parts store and brought it home. Once home I double checked the owners manuel and I found the CI/4 spec, so I read the entire bottle and could not find any mention of this spec so I returned the oil. Then I went to rotellas website and they claim the oil is CI/4 compatible so I did a dealer search and found a company that deals with oil exclusively. I went down to this dealer and there rotella bottles did have the CI/4 spec on the back so I bought six gallons. Now I don't know if this was just a labeling change or if the oil was different but I like knowing the oil I bought was the RIGHT stuff. On another note this dealer checked on Delo and could find nothing that stated Delo met this spec so I personally would not use it. I also know that Dodge is telling there dealers to use what they have been using all along so I guess it is compatable but there bottles have no specs printed on them, go figure. Finally Geno's garage has the fleetguard filters if you need them personally I could not get a filter anywhere locally so I used them. Hope this info helps you out.

Question answered

Thanks a lot. I contacted Shell today. Basically, any Rotella T 14W40 produced in the past year meets the CI-4 rating. The back of the bottle should say it is CI-4 quality although for some reason Shell was not allowed to put the new rating on the "donut" until just last month. I was surprised how fast Shell responded. Impressive. :D

Is the new Rotella not as Rosemella as it use to be? I changed mine a couple of weeks ago and it just does not smell as strong as it use to??? I miss that strong smell, had to cook up a pot of pinto beans to supplement the missing odor :D

When I changed oil for the first time my buddies pulled up just as the last fresh oil was going in. We proceeded to run 30 miles down the highway and ended up behind a ferd diesel. After coiming to stop sign both wondered where the oder was coming from. They thought the truck in front of me and I replied "Ah no. Thats me!" It didn't last longer than the next 50 miles but I love that smell!;)
