Was in the convience store to buy my latest chance @ Powerball, and the guy ahead of me was purchasing a gallon of Rotella 15W40. He was showing holiday pictures of his kids and while waiting I noticed that the jug had a yellow oval on the face which said "Approved for 2002 and older engines" or something similar?? Never noticed this before??

Do the newer engines require a different oil??

The oil manufacturers have to state this promently??

I have a 2000, so was just curious??

You probably saw an older bottle of Rotella. If you had read closely you would have noticed that the text on the back also said it meets specification CI although the API donut says CH. Even though it met CI specs at time of manufacture, API had not given official approval and therefore no CI on the donut. However, newer bottles will say CI even though it is the same oil that was in the bottle you observed.

would castrol gt oil work as good as rotella??

As long as the Castrol is a 15w40 diesel that meet's the CI-4 rating it would be o. k. to use. However, when it come's to dino oils most guy's are partial to either the Shell RotellaT or Chevron Delo400.

Personally I use the Delo but if you can only get the Castrol in your area and it meet's the above spec's then use it and don't worry about it. FWIW, the mechanic who services's all our firetrucks at work uses the Castrol 15w40 Diesel oil.

Castrol GTX is NOT rated for CTD diesel engines. Here is a copy of Castrol North America's API License.

They have two products listed that would be acceptable for use in the 2002 and older CTD:

Castrol RX Super Duty 15W40

Castrol Syntec Blend Truck and 4X4 15W40.

Here is a link to an explanation about the API service classifications - for the CTD, the most current for all engines would be API CI-4/ SL. this is suitable for 2004 and older.

If you have some older oil in the garage, say 2 years old, it might only be rated CG-4 / CH-4 /**. This would be fine for 2002 and older trucks but not suitable for 2003 and up.

If you have additional questions, jsut PM me.

Note, I do not work for Castrol but do work for an oil manufacturer.
