Hi,

Is it a good idea to use this Rotella DFA(Diesel Fuel Additive) in a first gen. . I recently had my injector pump rebuilt and the guy at the shop said there's not enough lube in the fuel these days and it can be a little hard on the pump . . Is anyone using DFA? If so how much do you use in a 30 gallon fill up..... Thanks... . Chuck

Did.

Found it at Wal-Mart. Been using Power Services. I use the required amount (according to the directions on each jug). Thinking it works out to 14. 6 ounces per 30 gallons but I use it every fill up and generally only get 18 to 22 gallons into the tank. That would make it a bit strong, but I don't care.

The Shell brand sells for a bit more than PS. I purchase mine by the gallon.

Running strong?

Scott, can you run too strong with the additive/cetane boost? Last winter I put the whole 32 oz of PS in a full tank (treats 100 gallons) and it ran terrible, idled rough as can be, so since then, I would only use it sparingly when temps got real low. My buddy pulls fuel tanker and when he loads fuel, it gives the cloud point of the fuel mixture. He was very surprised when its been reading 5-12 above F. I always thought cloud point/ gelling point was much higher than that. He gave me a very concentrated bottle of additive by 'Starreon winter flow'. 10 ounce bottle treats 240 gallons wow!! Sure beats PS 32 oz for 100 gallons. Havent used any yet as temps barely have hit 20F. I liked Howes fuel additive, but I have only seen it at the truck stops, and everything there is high dollar. I switched to Stanadyne Performance Formula when they took the lubricity out of diesel. The local Bosch re-builder says he has seen 1st gen. pumps with 350,000 miles on them using it.

I've never found the Stanadyne around here. I have used Power Service since I bought my 90, because the previous owner gave me what was left of his.

Been working well so far. About 260k miles between the 2 trucks, that I've put on. My usage is about the same as Scott's.

I use the Rotella DFA when I cant get over to Sikeston to the Bosch shop to get Stanadyne. It seems to be almost as good for cleaning smoke. Lubricity is hard to tell just by looking and listening. I use the super scientific formula of 2-3 glugs per 25 gal fill up. 96oz will last me a month.

I can't find stanadyne around here either... . the local truck parts place used to carry it but switched to FPPF brand whoever they are. The store guys said it has all the same stuff that Stanadyne has, so I've been using it. Seems to keep the smoke down a mite.

Tried the PS, but it's not as concentrated so I go thru it too fast, so I switched back.

Probably like engine oil... . doesn't matter so much what you use as long as you do. The old pumps need the added lubricity.

Of course then there's that "secret 350 hp formula" that the Pastor buys in 55 gal drums.

I heard a rumor that he's just about used up his curent barrel and will be ordering the "secret 450 hp formula" soon.....

He must be planning to use a dremel to open up that barrel!!!!:D :D

This is what I was told by the parts department at the local John Deere dealer. The fuel additive they have on the shelf is made for them by Stanadyne. It's very expensive, go figure:rolleyes: They also sell antifreeze. At twice the cost from Wal-Mart. (Who buys this stuff?)

Do not add hyd. oil/engine oil/ps oil to your tank.

Some fuel injection pump shops sell the Stanadyne brand.

Scott

Too strong? I don't know. Double doseage is often used. I suppose you could, but it would have to be strong I'm thinking. I once ran a diesel farm tractor on only fuel additive, ran fine. But it's got a different pump.
