Ok, I am new to this and inquiring minds need to know !!!!!
I noticed that most of you seem to like Rotella T 15w40 oil. Has anyone used the Mystik JT-8 15W50 oil?? I know that a lot of the big trucks use it and will not use anything else. Need your imput here.
Also have another question. I noticed that a lot of you use letters to discribe something that you are talking about such a "VA". Is there anyplace to go to find out just what you are talking about. I am new to this and in a lot of cases I haven't a clue as to what you are talking about.
Sure have learned a lot here. Glad I joinded.

I use the JT815W50 and in the heat we have around here, wouldn't run anything else. A first gen. guy turned me on to the Mystic oil when he pulled the dipstick on his '89 with over 200,000 miles, and the oil was as clean as if it was in a brand new one. I have 98,000 miles, and unless I've been pushing it pretty hard pulling, the oil will usually be almost as clear coming out at oil change as the new oil I'm putting in. The only downside I can really see is it is a little harder to find, but I don't worry about it much because no matter how hard I work the Cummins, it never, EEEEVER, uses any oil, so adding some away from home is never an issue.

I have used both rotella and delo. Both worked equally well. I use T. F. Purifiner on both my trucks and have switched to Amsoil. With the Purifiner you never change the oil so the extra cost is non-existant. I notice on my 99 that the fuel mileage increased from 19 to 20 mpg. I drive this truck very hard and consistantly get 20 around town now. Amsoil in truck for last 10,000 miles. I run heavy equipment-one ford dump with cummins engine(212,000 miles) has a purifiner filter system and is running original oil since 3,000 miles Delo 400. I have oil tested every 15,000 miles everything checks out ok.

I use 15w40 amsoil in the summer and 5w30 in the winter, I've put amsoil in all my running gear to, love the stuff. It has gave me 3 more miles to the gallon and great protection.

kojak:

Welcome Aboard!

I am presently using the Rotella T 15W-40
oil in my truck. I have 102,000 miles on the truck now and have had no engine problems at all. I previously used this same oil in my 92' Dodge Ram Cummins and sold it with
94,000 miles on it. No engine problems
with that truck either. As the other members
posted, the Amsoil, Delo and Mystic oils are
all very good too. My brother is an over-the
road truck driver and had recommended the
Rotella T to me a few years ago as being a
good oil for their rigs. I've been using
it ever since. Also, the availability of
Rotella T is very good in this area. This
oil gets a workout in my truck because it
is very hot here in the summer too.

I use "Rotella T" 15-W-40 in everything from lawn mowers to forklifts. I have always used it in my Rams and in any and all Diesel and gas vehicles. It is a great all around oil and I have never had any problems at all.

I used Rotella T for 20 yr's. 2 yr's ago I switched to Shell Rotella synthetic blend 10-40. I use this oil in my cars,Dodge, and my Freightliner. Better startups in winter, but still has good viscosity in summer.
My understanding is that an oil that doesn't get dirty isn't doing it's job by not holding and surrounding the impurities the filter can't catch.
Has anyone else heard this?
Personaly I think any of the brand name oils are OK.
When I buy Shell oil by the gallon,It's shipped in from TX.
When I buy Shell oil by 55gal. drum, it's blended by Ashland Oil in Canton,Oh.
So ask yourself, How consistant is the oil?

My poor old sickly Ram has run Castrol 15-40 RX Super and Chevron Delo 400, same weight. Just be sure the oil you select meets latest API specs like SJ and CH4. Clear oil means it did not suspend any soot. Either the engine didn't get any into the oil, or it was deposited somewhere (not good). Sickly's comes out black, every 3000 miles. I change it instead of playing around with analyzing it. New oil and the LF3349 filter costs what, $20-25. Cheap insurance. Cummins and Fleetgaurd said there's no reason for the special (microglass, stratapore) oil filters in a Ram's duty cycle. OK, makes it that much easier to change it often; I'm not "wasting" a special, expensive filter that has "more life" left in it.
Hope this helps

I use Rotella T 15 w 40 and have had the oil analyzed. It came back good in all cagatories. If your oil is clean coming out at the change then where is the soot and carbon. If you read the label on the oil container it will tell you that it is suppose to carry the soot. I want my oil to look black at the change then I know it is cleaning as well a lubricating

Most of the people who use Rotella T use the 15w-40 weight. I have used the Rotella T 10W-30 with good results. The owners manual states that 10w-30 is preferred. Go figure... .
