How long is a gallon of oil good, sitting on the shelf?

I was recently clearing some of the clutter in the garage and found a case of Rotella T 15W40 that dates back to April of 2001

Can I still use this in my 1997, or has the checmistry broken down over the last 8 years?

I would rather not waste this if it is still good...

Thanks for the help!

Put the case in your vehicle and ride it around (agitate) for a few weeks to reblend any additives that may have settled out. You could spend 10 minutes shaking each gallon.

It ain't hurt.

How old is crude oil when it comes out of the ground? A million years? Thousands of years? I don't think oil has a shelf life. Perhaps the additives do. I'd use it. Someone on TDR posted about a sale of Valvoline Premium Blue a year ago. I went over and bought 20 cases. I have a large stack of them in my barn that'll last me for several more years.
