Anyone using rotella synthetic that lives in the cold climate experiencing alot of smoke when starting a cold engine? Man mine smokes enough to fog out a neighborhood. If I plug it in, it doesn't do it. Also, when the truck does warm up after a cold start, it quites smoking. Is this a problem or just the oil?

Thanks

It is not the oil, it is just the engine is cold and combustion is not complete. All diesels do this when it is cold. White/grayish smoke, yeah that is normal.

I have been using Rotella SB for over 300K and and have, what I think, excellent results.

Hope that helps?

Just let your neighbors know that you are spraying for mosquitoes early this year;)

Been on Rotella Syn for last 70K miles, entering third Colorado Winter. Last few days saw morning starts of -1 deg F.

As others noted, cold weather starts can show a little more white smoke than normal. Only time I see what you're describing is when the fun box is set on 5x5. I don't normally run there so not a problem.

I use a 5W-w0 synthetic engine oil. The trucks smokes if I don't warm it before driving. It is not the oil's fault.

Is this your first winter with a diesel?

Thanks for the replies

Thanks for all the replies. This is my first 1 ton with a diesel. I used to own a fld120 freightliner and a freightliner fl70 w/ cat 3126. Never have any hard smoke from the rig but the cat motor would smoke bad until warm up and had the rotella 15w40 in it. Wasn't sure if this was normal for the cummins so had to ask. This is my first winter with this truck so pretty cautious with it until I get to know it better.

Randy:)
