I see rotella has finally put out a full synthetic oil.

Has any one tried it ?

Does the 5W rateing fect my 96 5. 9 twelve valve?

I live in the philadelphia area and it get to cold.

Wal-Mart is starting to carry it. ($18. 88 per gal)

JimE

I have been useing it for a little over a month and I have seen temps from 60F above to 22F below zero, It sure speeds oil pressure in the cold temps compared to 15-40. I also am going to use extended drains (in my case) of 6,000-8,000 miles or 6 months whichever occure first.

I would think the oil would be o. k. for a 12 valve the same as a 24 valve, the oil is still rated at 40 weight under operateing temps.

There have been a few threads about the Rotella 5w40 in the last few months.

Just how cold does it get in Philly?

At $18. 88/gallon you might as well buy the true synthetic Group V, Delvac 1 5w40 for ~$20/gallon. These two oil are not in the same league. I'm not bashing the Rotella 5w40, but for extra $1 or $2 the Delvac 1 is probably a better oil (I haven't seen any proven oil analysis with the Rotella to be for sure). But being at Wally-World the convience of picking up the Rotella sure is nice.

Another option to possibly consider is the Delo 5w40 "Synthetic". It is in the same classification as the Rotella, so you are truely comparing apples to apples. Some members have found the Delo 5w40 for ~$11/Gallon, but around here it's $14. 49.

Good luck,

Ryan

rotella 5W40W

I've been using it since Dec. 1 i like it... truck starts easier, oil pressure comes up faster, milage sems up a tad. I'm a great believe in synthetic oil in cold temps... . used it in my Mazada MX 6 car is still running 220,000 miles no engine work, just starting to burn a little oil now maybe 1 1/2 pints between changes. In the Dodge I'll change every 6,000 miles with a filter every 3,000.

In the summer I'll switch to Delo dino oil (I don't tow anything heavy yet) when I start towing a 5th wheel I'll switch to synthetic full time. I use rotella synthetic because it availave at Wally world and the others mentioned aren't.

Around here Delvac 1 is close to $30. 00 per gallon and Delo 5-40 is hard to find and if I can it is $21. 00 per gallon. I personally don't have a reason for useing Rotella for any reason other than cost and cold climates.

Ron

swampfox,

If you plan on switching back to dino oil during the warmer months, you might want to stick with the Shell lubes. You will have less "additive clash". It's unlikely that you would run into any problems, but IMO it is better stay within the same brand.

My $. 02,

Well Bill, time for my 2 reale (bits)?

Shell recently added 2 products to the local market, Diesel Fuel Additive (DFA) and the Rotella Synthetic 5W-40 engine oil. I'm still amused the Rotella is at Wal-Mart and the DFA is next door at Sorry (Sam's) Club, but not at both.

Many people have opposing opinions on the Rotella Synthetic oil, but I'm sure it will be fine for most people. Personally I quit using Rotella T 16 years ago so I have no reason to try the synthetic.

I don't understand the idea to use synthetic for the winter advantage only. The summer properties are also superior to conventional oils. Do you use anti-freeze in the winter and coolant in the summer in the same product?

Ron;

Orchard Oil in GF has Delvac 1 for under $20. 00 per gallon. I asked out at IDD and the biggest usage they see is for diesel refer units. (Uncle) Mike has it in his Ram. I'm going to compare dipsticks at the February 9th gathering in Northwood as I decided to give AMSOIL a try in both vehicles. OK, OK, we haven't had much winter for the cold soak testing, but I'm sure happy with brand "A" performance.

My opinion, my 2 bits;

JohnE,

If your talking about the delvac 1 full synthetic why the hell didn't you tell me about it a month ago :D ;) When we were have this oil discussion here on the tdr, just ribing you, but if I can Delvac 1 full synthetic group V for under $20. 00 per gallon that is what i will be useing next oil change, I have used Mobil oil all my life.

Where is Orchard oil and what is IDD and where and can I buy Delvac 1 there also.

Ron

Ron, Orchard oil is on Gateway, just east of the Simonson station (right next door to Tobiason Potato). IDD (Interstate Detroit Diesel), is just south of the I-29 truck stop. Sorry I didn't pipe up when you had the oil questions going on earlier, but I didn't know Orchard carried Delvac1, for only..... I'll pm it to you if you want to know... ...

Mike,

Thanks for the directions, next time I'am in town I will have to stop by there.

Yes, e-mail me the price, or you can post it on the thread as the rules for the forums state you can as long as your not a dealer and then you can as long as state you are a dealer. At least that is my interpriation of the rules. A PM would be fine though but I usually forget about my PM box.

Ron

Ron;

I just learned of it from Uncle Mike a week ago. I too had only found it for $25-30 per gallon. IDD is one of the priceier places.

JimE;

You asked on using a 5W-XX oil in the Cummins. You should be past the rule of thumb 20-30k miles before using a synthetic oil. Cummins does recommend 5W-XX Synthetic oils for Arctic conditions. You shouldn't have any problems.

I use the AMSOIL 5W-30 and have the same temperature swings as Ron. I haven't noticed any additional oil misting from the vent pipe nor reduced oil pressure during warmer temperatures that some people notice running a thinner/synthetic oil.

-John

Mike,

Thanks for the PM, the price is not much cheaper than rottela syn but the quality of Delvac 1 exceedes the price of rottela syn. next oil change I will be switching over to Delvac 1.

Thanks again,

Ron
