I have 220k on the odometer and have been running Rotella 15-40 but i would like to switch to amsoil. I have heard that if you switch that seals might start leaking. Has any one switched with this many miles?

I don't think that it would cause any problems, but heck, with that many miles, it might make more sense just to stay consistant with what you have since you seem to be having good luck with it. :)

I switched to Rotella synthetic at 352,000, motor had been on Delo 400 since new. I haven't had leakage issues in the 30,000 miles since. Did have some slight seepage in a couple places where dirt accumulates on the motor but going syn didn't increase this at all.

I would go to Rottella syn for a couple changes then to Amsoil. I'm going Amsoil on my next change.

I have 462,000+ miles on mine... used rotella since new... . If it ain't broke... ... . As long as you are changing your oil and filter regularly, there seems to be little difference in cost whether you use synthetic or mineral based. If you do use synthetic and change the oil at twice the intervals as suggested by amsoil, then you need to do continuous oil analysis which increases the cost of using a full synthetic.

There are some advantages with a full synthetic, but if you have had success with the rotella ( Wal Mart had it recently for 4. 95 a gallon) why switch?

The reasons you might have oil seepage is that the Amsoil is highly detergent and will clean carbon build-ups around seals and since it viscosity is lower may allow it to seep by seals but that is more conjecture than fact.

Glad to hear you have as many miles as you do, I just rebuilt my alternator yesterday, and it was just before leaving me stranded. Not bad for an origional alternator. Still have the origional water pump... what a wonderful and quality engine Cummins builds!

When I bought my old '89 the original owner had been running a Shell synthetic and the rear main was leaking like a sieve. When I changed the oil I used Rotella and the rear main never leaked another drop. Maybe in '89 they used different seals that didn't like the syn. Any paricular reason you want to change? I'm happy with Rotella, my $0. 02.
