Trying to help out a friend

He has a 2002, 24-valve, auto transmission, old edge chip not prgramable and low pressure fuel indicater lite that come on if below 9 psi. which it never did.

When he first started it up yesterday it started running real rough bucking etc. , check engine came on then it raced to red line & quit. Said it sounded like it was going to blow up. He restarted it ran ok went about 100 miles engine light on shut it down restarted engine light went out. Seems to run fine at present. He has had an ongoing problem with it running rough on occation but never to this extent. He has had mechanics look at it & changed fuel filters etc. to no avail.

I would appreciate it if someone could give us some ideas on where to start.

thank you

PS. He had the factory lift pump go out while driving through Dalls Ore. 2 years ago. They replaced it with the same type.

For starters it'd be helpful to know what DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) caused the check engine light to illuminate.

From your description, it sounds like a problem with the computer in the Bosch VP44 fuel injection pump.

Thank you JLandry

I'll pas the message along. That was going to be his next step. I told him he was going to have to bite the bullet & put out the $180. 00 to hook-up to the old analyzer.

He can check the codes himself through his odometer by cycling the key. On-off, on-off, on-off. Once you get the code the Dr's can diagnose!

Also, it's usually best to completely remove any chips or programmers from the system to rule them out as culprits. They can be added back later once the problem is fixed.

Could well be the Edge. If it is model"EZ", I had issues with mine, with somewhat similar results. Under loaded hill climbing, it acted like it shut off fuel. Unplug it and try again.

Joe,

I think you mistyped. It's actually OFF-ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON (i. e. : leave ignition key ON) and read DTC's in the odometer window.

I had some erratic running with mine lately and replacing the crank and cam sensors fixed it. His 2002 would just have the cam sensor I believe, Cummins stopped using the crank sensor for 2000 but not sure what year exactly.
