This is my first diesel so forgive me if this is normal... .

I have a 2001. 5 6 speed 3500 with 49000 miles. I just purchased it a week ago. It drives great, starts great, but shuts down a little rough. The engine bucks as it is going down and the engine (stick) shakes. It is not a prolonged "dieseling" :) shutdown, just a little rough. Is this normal for a diesel?

Also, I replaced the stock air cleaner with a K&N in the stock housing. I now hear a high pitched whine that starts around 1800 RPM and gets higher as more throttle is applied. I assume this is the Turbo spooling up... is this normal?

I am leaning torwards an EZ, but for a MPG increase as much as a power increase. Does an EZ hurt/help or no difference for MPG? I am right at 17 MPG with just the K&N. It doesn't look like the K&N made a difference in MPG but I will leave it there for now.

Thanks for any information...

2001. 5 quad cab SLT+ 3500. HO with 6 speed manual.

Sounds normal

Carl,

Mine shakes on shutdown. Nothing serious, but you definitely notice it more than a gasser.

The whine you hear is the turbo. When I installed my K&N I really noticed the sound. Didn't appear to increase my mileage at all. It's fun to listen to the turbo on a long uphill pull:p

Don't know about the EZ, but I'm going to try out a Van Aaken and will let you know if it gives me a MPG increase.

Yep, she shakes like a dog passing peach pits when you shut 'er down. She also rattles, smokes and smells. Unrefined beast, ain't it? ;) :D

The EZ was worth about a 10% mileage improvement (1 mpg) when towing our 5ver. With the EZ's boost elbow installed on our HX-35, boost increased from 22 PSIG to 32 PSIG, and maximum pre-turbo EGT dropped from 1300 degF to 1100 degF (with the BHAF and 4" exhaust. ) Those are nice fringe benefits - the extra mid-range "punch" is worth the price of admission by itself.

Normal, but alot of TDR members don't trust this filter. I would stay with factory OEM or look at BHAF

Just remember that when you add the EZ your warranty on your engine is history. Before you add the EZ you should add the Fuel pressure guage, boost, etc. Some members VP44 shot craps after adding a box to the engine. I understand that it will do it shortly after the box is added or not at all. If it kills the VP44 figure on $2K to replace it. Not trying to scare you but you need to be aware of the risk/reward. Repeat after me - I am my own warranty station

:D :D :D

Carl,

These things stop so hard that sometimes the belt "chirps". Nothing like lots of compression to bring the action to a halt right now. As long as the motor mounts hold up you are ok.

If........

you love your Cummins, get rid of the K&N filter. Either stay with stock or go woth Amsoil. I'll get flamed big time, but I have personally seen our engines damaged by K&N filters. No, not we "think that's what caused it", but definite dirt contamination through the air filter. Our dealership always ties to disuade customers from using them.

Back in the archives, you will see a post I made on this subject, from my personal experience during our year 2000 fire disasters in Helena. Inspection of my Amsoil filter on sunday confirmed what I saw 20 months ago. My turbine wheel is completely clean using the Amsoil filter. The K&N I threw out in 2000 left the wheel covered with soot after three months of use during the fire season. After 20 months, through dust and everything else, no contamination.

Dont worry about the vp44 with the EZ box. The EZ is plug and play, and is very easily removeable. It is the major fueling boxes (the ones that tap the pump wire, Edge comp box, powermax, blue chips wizard etc etc etc. ) that have the potential to kill the vp44. I Certainly dont want to imply that they will, just that they can. I have had good luck with my powermax. These "major" fueling boxes work by increasing the duty cycle on the solenoid, and there is the potential to do harm. The EZ is an absolute kick in the butt, that was my first mod, and was a great place to start. I can not agree more with pitbull however about the need for the fuel pressure gauge. The factory lift pumps (as well as a lot of the aftermarket ones) leave a lot to be desired. I believe that a dead lift pump will be more likely to nuke the vp44 than adding a fueling box. There are many many members who have had different boxes/combos on their trucks with no injection pump failures for many miles. If you do a search however, you will find many reports of injection pumps going south after finding out the truck had a bad lift pump. coincidence?? probably not. just my . 02
