Hello,

Long time follower first time posting...

I have an '05 2500 Quad, G56, 4x4 with 52K on it.

Two weeks ago it started to shutter while starting cold and produces a puff of white smoke (no a whole lot). It sounds almost like the engine doesn't want to fully start like some of the cylinders are not awake, for a lack of a better term. But after a few seconds, it's right as rain! I do use Opti-Lube, could this be the cause and what is the problem that I am describing?

I have no mods to speak of w/ the truck, save for the bedliner and A. R. E. topper.

Thank you for your time

Jim

Really sounds like an injector not closing completely... . does the truck have a little longer than what you remember as normal crank time?

The start time is actually about the same, I did have the batteries replaced a few monthst ago (had EOM!). Crank-to-start time is aboput the same. would you recomend I take it to a dealer for possible service? Or is this something I can look into by myself?

An 05 will be out of warranty time wise in most cases, you will end up spending less money if there is a Bosche shop you can take it to

How cold outside when it does it? It does sound like an injector dripping into the cylinder when it sits. White smoke is unburned fuel, so you either have too much fuel or not enough compression (heat) to light it off. How does it run in all other conditions?

I live close to Suncoast Transmissions (even though I own a manual). Temp outside is great in the early a. m. (60-70).

I was under the impression that I had 10 ye/100k mile warranty on powertrain???

I will look for a Bosch Shop nearby... I know of a Cummins Shop.

Thank you for your help in this, I don't need any problems with it before I deploy again.

Located a Bosch Service center in Pensacola, FL

Located several Cummins Service (Authorized) centers Pensacola and Fort Walton Beach.

I do have reservations about this though. My wife brought up that fact that the perceived problem started when I initially started using Opti-Lube summer blend, which I forgot all about. Has anyone ever heard of problems with Opti-Lube and the problems I described? Or is this product cleaning out all the problems I have had over the few years I owned the truck? Thank you in advance

I was just talking about this in my workplace and it was brought up that I should take my truck in to have the injectors cleaned... is this an option? Last oil change I had, nothing was suggested about this.

If you want to try cleaning them, get a quart of CRC Diesel Fuel Therapy and add it to a full tank of fuel. That is the product used in the latest Dodge TSB for diagnosing and correcting driveability concerns. The only difference is the dealer uses the scan tool to raise the rail pressure for 30 seconds at a time to help clean any deposits out.

I would get that symptom once in a while. I just ignored it. It went away. Sometimes the crank sensor can cause longer crank times and when it starts there a bunch of unburnt fuel getting spit out. If still under warranty, definitely take it in so they record it. That way later on if something fails you can show pre-existing condition not fixed.
