I just got off the telephone with Jared at Royal Purple Lubricants. The purpose of my call was to ask for their lubricant recommendation for the Dodge NV-5600 6-speed transmission.

He recommended their standard synthetic 10W-30 motor oil and confirmed that EP (extreme pressure) additives are not necessary for this application. So, this jives with the 5W-30 recommendation given by Amsoil.

So, for you folks who want to use something besides the Texaco STF 1874 product, here is another recommendation for a synthetic product.

asked NVG too

I spoke with 3 different people at the New Venture Gear Transmission operations in Muncie and asked if THEY had a recommendation for a synthetic lube in our application. They each said that the Texaco product is the only one they have ever used.

Two of the three folks at NVG thought Castrol Syntorq might work OK but the third one said she had heard that Syntorq might be "incompatible with the bronze blocking rings. " (Quoted as closely as I can remember).

What are blocking rings?

I put the Royal Purple in today and thought it shifted a little better. I'll be doing some towing tomorrow so we'll see how it acts. I might keep some Texaco on hand for the warranty police though! :D

Wouldn't the detergents in the motor oil be bad for the 5600? I use royal purple in my diffs and would lovr to put it in the transmission if there is no problem... ...

my dad has run amsoil in his '01 for 200,000 miles pulling a 40 ft. gooseneck since his first change with no problems yet
