I have a simple question, I bought a few cases of royal purples 15w40 about a month ago from a friend. Its now time to change the oil in my 70 dodge d200 pickup with a 383, will the 15w40 be ok to run, i have heard that racers always use 15w40, what do you guys think? Thanks corey

what do you mean by 'racers'? The race engines i've seen used 20w-50... this was 1/4 milers though. I think it'd be ok, but really the engine was designed around 10w-30 type oil. The seals and bearings might not like the heavier weight much.

I've run straight 30w before with no problems in an old truck of mine. Is this truck 4wd? I'd like to see a pic, I love those old dodges. Good beaters!

i'll try to get some pics on here soon, my boss runs one of our race ways out here and he says they all run 15w40. Thats what he says, so thats why i would like some more advice on the situation. The truck isnt 4wd but it does have at posi track and it seems to go almost anywhere. corey

I had a 70 dodge 3/4 ton truck that I installed a 440 with a steel crank, TRW forged pistons, bushed adjustable rockers, good rod bolts, and a lot of other things also. For a tow truck it was fun to drive. I gave it to my son and he would drag race it. He told me that he put in on a 454 ss truck.

I ran 15-50 mistic and I never had a bit of trouble with it. I did not use full groved mains as the crank was cross drilled. You would be supprised to see the different ideas as far as fully groved and not fully groved bearings and oil pump volume requirments and how reccomends them. GM and Dodge.

I use to turn my 80 camaro from 4k to 6. 5k for hours on end and never a problem. A 68 camaro 302 engine that was also my street car and I had the rev limet set a 8k and that is with steel rods. It was a sprint car bottom end with a special set of cylinder heads at the time and a 600 isky roller camshaft and related parts. There is few things that gave me that kind of thrill as to hear and fell a engine pull to 8k hard.

I never had a bit of trouble with the engine and it used 15-50 mistic. I dont wont to think about it to much as that stuff is had to stop once you start. Jim K

Good stuff...

I run the same 15w40 LE oil in my 66 Chrysler 300 as my Dodge/Cummins. Works great. The 383 in the 300 is full of speed parts and I drive it hard

we run 15w 40 in all of our company cars and truck and have had not problems. we have explorers that have 300k on them and we have not done any engine work on them. As far as i am concerned 15w 40 is the way to go.
