Finally got over to PDR and had my manifold drilled and tapped for the pyro wired it in this am. Installed an AFE oiled type airfilter. Took truck out and noticed a decided drop in the amount of mosquito deterrent. Ran up to 2750 rpm 1150/1200 degrees egt. And now I would like to know what stock numbers are and where to go from here

Hey there you ole fart,

You sneeked into PDR again!!

My apologies for not calling yet, but I will.

The stock trucks generally 'topped out' around 2450 RPM, plus or minus a bit.

Also I think that they were so detuned (read underfuel/timed, etc) that you'd probably never see much over 900*F.

I did not have my Pyro before I put in the 185's so I don't know for sure what the EGT's were originally, but even afterward, with mandrell bent exhaust I didn't run over 800*F fully loaded.

So, allowing for temp reduction due to exhaust upgrade, I'd guess 900*F max (or there abouts. )

Okay BCaldwell, I'm confused.

Do you mean to imply highest EGT's at top RPM? Under load, my EGT's go up as the RPM is pulled down or if I lug the engine at lower RPM's.

If you are getting 1150-1200 degrees at 2750 rpm with no payload (?) that sounds kinda high. Add some pulling weight on a hill and maybe you'd easily go over the edge on EGT's.

I used to go "over the egt edge' pretty easy before I advanced my timing (it had actually been retarded from the factory setting). Now, on a long steep climb, towing 16,000#s, it will creep over 1250 if the load starts pulling my rpm's down too much. I don't have a tach but put another way, in the same pulling scenerio, if it lugs down to 50MPH in 5th gear I need to keep a close eye on the pyro. Interestingly, easing slightly on the throttle quickly limits egt without much loss in power. Sometimes the cruise control does better at this than my foot.

Hey BushWakr - 800*F fully loaded! I'm impressed. Oo. How much do you attribute to the injectors and to the exhaust. Also, why did you choose 3 1/2 diam instead of 4? I can't afford to do either right now but . . . I have a dream. :)

bflood, I bought the truck 5 months ago and discovered TDR shortly there after. Finally got all the gauges installed along with the new air filter and took her out for a drive. The numbers I got were mt on flat ground. So as you say hauling a load could prove to be real interesting. I was told the injectors had been done recently and the pump had also been done in the last year, so quite possibly the setup is off now with the guidance of fellow TDR members maybe I will get this truck running the way she should.

bflood,

What I was trying to say was that in 'near' stock trim I did not see high temps.

With 3. 5" exhaust (cheaper at that time) K&N, timing @13. 5*, very small starwheel increase I would see about 800*F @2450 RPM/18psi, in OD.

This was with an 8' 6" camper loaded for 2 weeks, plus utility trailer weighing about 1600 lbs.

When I went to the 185's I saw temps go up. I had the timing advanced a bit and that helped reduce them. Then, put in K&N and that helped reduce them a bit, but... alas, I also added more fuel which ... you know . . up they went.

Then went to the 16cm housing and that helped a bit.

Then put in the POD's and HOLY COW !!!! UP THEY WENT !!

Then more timing advance and that helped bring em down.

So after all that, countless hours 'tweaking and tiddling' I now run max temps of approx. 1050 - 1100*F hard pull in OD up a decent grade (empty. )

I'm also getting about 17. 8 MPG around town, light-light stuff which aint too bad.
