Simple question.

While pulling a slight grade empty,

1. Down shift to increase RPM and lower EGT

OR

2. Keep RPM low and let the EGT run up a little (+/- 200*)

What would produce the best MPG?

As long as the EGT's are within the allowable range, the choice is yours in my opinion. Also, just because you are running lower rpm does not mean you are getting better mileage. Given your example, I would not downshift at all going up a slight grade empty. Just set the cruise control and go.

Slight grade empty? My truck doesn't recognize such things. :-laf :-laf

Let it find its own range and don't sweat the temps. :)

The power is not an issue. What is in question is wheather 800-1000* is better or worse than 800-1000 RPM from a milage stand point.

I should make that a moderate upgrade and throw in trying to hold the 45-55 MPH.

The biggest problem is the slipage in the converter.

To pull the hill in OD lockup @ low rpm

OR

To down shift to 3rd lockup @ higher RPM
