Background:
I recently purchased a 1996 12V with 124K miles on it. No historical information from PO. I am trying to decide if the KDP has been fixed before going to the trouble of pulling the gear cover. It currently has bright orange RTV. This makes me think someone else has already done the job. Does anyone know what factory color RTV is on the gear cover? See picture:

Does not look stock for sure.

I kinda thought there was a gasket, but if not mine was black in color either way. Same on the install of the new used black.

I can't remember exactly which brand of kit I used, but the sealant was the high temp orange stuff, came in a squeeze tube. Mine looks the same way on the 95 12 valve.

It was probably the BD kit, Geno's sold the BD branded items back then. I have the BD gov spring kit too, installed those about 16 years ago.

I have seen them with a gasket and gray rtv, never orange. Still, you don't know how well or completely the job was done. Loctite and re-tightening bolts, etc. could have been missed. You can see from the paint chipped off the bolt heads that they were removed after initial engine assembly and painting.

My truck came with the gasket material painted over, because it was originally built/painted tan.
Reason I know this is, under the vibration damper was tan when I did the KDP. :D

It could of been removed to replace the front crank seal for all you know, with no service records it’s just a guess that’s what the cover was removed for.

I believe I used the gasket and black. Orange is high temp, but not sensor safe. Not an issue with our trucks.

Ok, next week I am going to pull the radiator and hotsy it, while out I will check the KDP. I will report findings.

ok, don't forget to remove, spray clean, lblue loctite the four case bolts you can remove, either open or exposed through a window in the cam gear. Using a bent open end wrench, reach behind the gear to tighten the fifth bolt.

Hi Mr. Donnelly, good to hear from your library of wisdom. We had numerous interactions in the late 90's early 2000's at the first may madness events. I am having follow up issues with this truck I am still sorting out. I will post a new thread for input.
