It looks like your post was blown away yesterday on the seat belt light question. The seat belt light doesn't extinguish because you latch it. The seat belt switch is located inside the retractor. It closes and extinguishes the light when enough web material is pulled out of the retractor to latch the belt. The fact that it is trying to go out when you wiggle the buckle is probably coincidental to you moving in the seat and the belt is being 'jossled' in the retractor. Just try pulling more belt out and see if the light goes out. It's either the seat belt switch in the retractor (which is not serviceable) or could be the connector under the seat not making good contact. I believe it's a two wire system and the switch in the retractor makes continuity when the belt is pulled out. Hope this helps.

Mine is a 2001, also. The 2000 manual and 2001 supplement show that. Are you out of warranty? You may tried disconnecting the connector going to those two wires and short the wires and see if the light extinguishes. I don't know how you would get the wires out of the receiver to spread or clean the contacts for better continuity. I don't think you are crazy. If they have incorrect info in the service manual, that's a problem.

Rugbyman,
I think you and Alan are both correct. I will check my 2001. 5 service manual tonight when I get home. I believe there IS a switch in the latch and a switch that indicates that there is some belt pulled out of the retractor. I believe the retractor sensor is what allows the airbag to deploy.
later... .

Rugbyman,
You are correct. The entire circuit is controlled by the switch in the latch. It is a normally closed contact that goes to ground. When you insert the seatbelt tip, it interrupts this path to ground and turns off the chime. There is no interaction with the retractor on our models... . Sorry Alan #ad

Then it's time to open the ol' toolbag #ad

Thanks for the help guys.

Alan: I'm not sure what model your truck is, but I swear to you there is a two-wire cable going up into the actual buckle itself. Maybe they switched it around on the new ones? Also, when it comes on, it will stay on until I mess with the buckle, and all I have to do is put a little but of pressure - kind of like I'm pulling it out, and the light will shut off - I don't even have to move the belt. I hope I can still get some guidance. Am I crazy here or what?

Thanks, Mick. Sorry, Rugbyman. The whole reason I was looking at this was because my light doesn't come on after the truck is started and the locking feature (when I put on brakes) isn't working. I guess that's why I was so focused on the retractor switch. Sorry about that. Thanks again Mick. That gives me a new avenue to explore. Again, my apologies.
