It's rumored that Dodge is working on an Aisen 6 sp auto.

Anyone else hear this?

Mitsubishi-Fuso is reported to be now using the Aisin 6 speed automatic in the redesigned FE and up series of low cab fowards. It is new for 2005 and I understand Mitsu has it as an exclusive for the 2005 model year. It is supposed to be offered to any and all OEM's in the future. Specs are as follows: 1st 3. 742, 2nd 2. 003, 3rd 1. 343, 4th 1. 00, 5th . 773, 6th . 634, and Rev 3. 539. It is supposed to be strong enough to not require torque reduction management. Model name is MY600 and has HD lockup torque converter with 2nd-6th with lockup capability.

that double over would be great for the 4. 10 or larger diff's, but with 3. 73's you'd need to be crusing at past 120kph/70mph to get the engine into the torque rise

Don't say Japan --- can you say.....

CHINA... ... ... ... that's where almost everything will be made in the future... .

68RE or 68RFE is the designation, the program is called the 58RE/68RE program. Slated to be made in USA at the kokomo transmission plants. Will be a derivative of the 545RFE that is currently behind the 4. 7 and the 5. 7 engine in trucks

Hey, you might be surprised what the Cummins can do. I've got a '97 4. 10 OD-stick with a gear vendors overdrive. Towed many a load at 26,000 GCVW,

and used double over a LOT on the flats. Got 11 mpg, no trouble accelerating,

and it really quieted down the cummins! Surprised even me. Had to watch my road speed at first though, cummins really wanted to run.

Thanks for that info. I don't know much about the 545RFE, but seem to rember it being a Diamler[German] trans? If so, then I assume that makes the Aisen rumor incorrect?

Any more news on this will be appreciated. I have 2 cummins Rams, one with the 48RE that has done pretty well for me, but it would be the best truck out there if it had at least 5 gears and could stand an exhaust brake. Other than that, the 48RE is great, and it makes towing in stop & go traffic so much more relaxing than the manual trans.

Thanks again for the info!

Sure would be nice to see an automatic transmission with the strength, flexibility and lifespan under load to match the Cummins! ;) :D

This is the info from Aisin's page

AISIN Develops the World's First 6-Speed Automatic Transmission for Light Duty Trucks

(August 2, 2004)

Aisin Seiki Co. , Ltd. (Headquarters: Kariya-city, Aichi, Japan; President: Kanshiro Toyoda) has developed the world's first 6-speed automatic transmission for light duty (2-4 t) trucks.

This transmission has adapted new developed lock up torque converter to enable to improve fuel efficiency as well as acceleration and driving power. In order to support the vehicle on a downward slope where drivers use foot brake often, the automatic transmission allows for the transmission to deliver optimum braking force according to driving speed, road inclination, and vehicle weight.

This transmission is now installed in "DYNA" and "TOYOACE" (TOYOTA cars released in this April), "HINO DUTRO"(Hino Motors), "FE 120, 145, 180"(Mitsubishi Fuso for North America).

With the core business being its drivetrain related products, AISIN Group is proud to have lined up the industry's widest range of products including automatic transmission, manual transmission, Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), clutches and a hybrid system. The AISIN Group continues to work on the development of high quality and attractive products that anticipate customers' needs, such as the response to downsizing, weight reduction and multiplication of gearshift to answer the needs of the times.

[Details]

1. Product Name: 6-Speed Automatic Transmission for Light Duty Trucks

2. Characteristics: (1) Improvement of operational performance and fuel efficiency

(a) Fuel efficiency as well as acceleration and driving power is improved by optimal gear sep up, adapted both a new developed torque converter with multi-disk type lock up and a sophisticated gear train arrangement (3 to 6-speed closer gear ratio)

(b) When a brake pedal is stepped on and stops, a gear will be changed into neutral automatically. It enables to improve fuel efficiency by reducing engine load.

(2) Improvement of engine braking performance

(a) When exhaust brake is used, the new automatic transmission controls braking force in accordance with driving speed, road inclination, and vehicle weight by automatic selection for the combination of gear ratio and lock-up control system.

*the world first development for the light duty (2-4t) commercial vehicle

(b) Improved the life of brake pad because of less number of applying foot brake.

(3) Compact-size as 4-speed automatic transmission

By adopting a sophisticated gear train arrangement and less number of components, this 6-speed automatic transmission becomes compact as the conventional 4-speed automatic transmission as well as secures the durability corresponding to use of tracks.
